One of the most remarkable Chardonnays I have tasted in 2016, the 2013 Mindego Ridge confused me initially. As someone who tastes volumes of wines, I often get into a rhythm of categorizing wines quickly. In the Chardonnay world with so many pseudo attempts at making wines emulating Burgundy, there are many wineries that simply over-oak and employ excess malolactic to their wines. At first glance I almost dismissed this wine as such—I was so wrong. Fortunately time and a little aeration brought me back to the wine's reality. Loaded with creamy oak, wild leaves and sweet earth, I thought that there was too much going on initially—but my palate regained its composure and enjoyed the experience of a bona-fide, fine Chardonnay. Starting to drink well now. I can't wait to pair this with a slow-roasted, organic chicken. (Tasted: August 12, 2016, San Francisco, CA)

The 2013 Chardonnay offers lots of apple skin, white peach, white flowers and a touch of brioche in its medium-bodied, fresh, elegant and downright pretty personality. Upfront and already delicious, it has an early appeal feel, but I suspect it will drink nicely for at least 3-4 years.

Mindego Ridge is a small 10-acre Santa Cruz Mountains vineyard perched on a south facing, shale-laced slope 8 miles from the Pacific lovingly farmed and cared for by husband and wife owners, David & Stacey Gollnick. Our mission is to produce 100% estate grown, single vineyard Pinot Noir and Chardonnay that authentically express the marine-influenced mountain terroir that is our home. Wines are crafted in small lots with minimal intervention by cool-climate virtuoso, Ehren Jordan.

One of the most popular and versatile white wine grapes, Chardonnay offers a wide range of flavors and styles depending on where it is grown and how it is made. While it tends to flourish in most environments, Chardonnay from its Burgundian homeland produces some of the most remarkable and longest lived examples. California produces both oaky, buttery styles and leaner, European-inspired wines. Somm Secret—The Burgundian subregion of Chablis, while typically using older oak barrels, produces a bright style similar to the unoaked style. Anyone who doesn't like oaky Chardonnay would likely enjoy Chablis.

A rugged and topographically diverse cool-climate appellation with a rich history, the Santa Cruz Mountains AVA stretches from Half Moon Bay, just south of San Francisco, to the northern border of Monterey County. Elevations range from 800 feet to upwards of 3,000 and microclimates vary substantially depending on which side of the mountains the vineyards lie; cool ocean winds and fog play an important role here. This can be a challenging region in which to grow grapes, but it is well worth the effort. Santa Cruz Mountains wines are noted for balanced acidity levels, often showing great aging potential. Wine has been made here since the 1800s, most notably from the legendary Ridge Vineyards, whose Monte Bello vineyard garners international admiration.

Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon are the stars of this region, while Merlot and Zinfandel also perform quite well. Organic and sustainable vineyard practices are becoming increasingly common.
