Winemaker Notes

The 2010 Alpha Series Syrah is an intense ruby red color. It has enchanting floral aromas accompanied by tobacco and leathery notes. It's powerful and full bodied on the palate, with soft and mature tannins and a very long and elegant finish.

Blend: 90% Syrah, 7% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Viognier

Critical Acclaim

RP 90
The Wine Advocate

The 2010 Montes Alpha Syrah comes from the Apalta sub-region in Colchagua and is blended with 7% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Viognier. It has a reticent nose that unfurls to reveal copious blueberry and cassis fruit laced with vanilla. The palate is full-bodied with a layer of creamy oak smeared over the spicy black fruit on the entry, though it shows good weight towards the powerful finish. Give this Syrah twelve months to calm down in bottle. Drink 2013-2020.

Montes
With the release of the first Montes Alpha wine back in 1988, Montes became one of the first premium wineries of Chile. Their premise, a clear belief that Chile had an untapped potential as a producer of quality wines, made them a benchmark for other wineries to follow. Its original four partners' total involvement and the continuous help of the angels that decorate their labels was key to their success. Two decades later, Montes is... View More

Responsible for the vast majority of American wine production, if California were a country, it would be the world’s fourth largest wine-producing nation. The state’s diverse terrain and microclimates allow for an incredibly wide-ranging selection of wine styles, and unlike tradition-bound Europe, experimentation is more than welcome here. Wineries range from boutique to massive corporations, and price and quality are equally varied—plenty of inexpensive bulk wine is made in the Central Coast area, while Napa is responsible for some of the world’s most prestigious and expensive “cult” wines.

Just about every style of wine you can imagine is made in California, from bone dry to unctuously sweet, still to sparkling, light and fresh to rich and full-bodied. Each AVA and sub-AVA has its own distinct personality. In the Napa Valley, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and other Bordeaux varieties dominate, as well as Sauvignon Blanc. Sonoma County is best known for Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Zinfandel. The Central Coast has carved out a niche with Rhône blends based on Grenache and Syrah, while Mendocino has found success with Alsatian varieties such as Riesling and Gewürztraminer. With all the diversity that California has to offer, it is certain that any wine lover will find something to get excited about.
