Winemaker Notes

This wine shows deep purple/black hues in the glass. Attractive aromas of dark cherry and bramble, blueberry with some cedar and caramel are carried onto the palate with a rich and full mouthfeel with spice, black plum, and a long lingering mineral/graphite finish.

Professional Ratings

Intense, deep in fruit and spot-on with respect to very keen Syrah spice, this head-turning effort is as poised and well-balanced as it is wonderfully rich, and its layered delivery of blackberries, sweet cream, roasted meats and pepper earns it a place among the best of the vintage. For all of its heft and considerable muscle, it is an uncommonly tailored wine, and its integral, carefully measured tannins lend just the right bit of grip without being in the least tough. It is a Syrah for the cellar in spite of its polish, and there is little question but that it will be going strong a full decade from now.

Morgan Winery is family owned and operated since 1982. We craft artisan, terroir driven wines from the Santa Lucia Highlands and Monterey Bay, including our own organically farmed Double L Vineyard.

Conscientious, innovative farming regimens allied with traditional, “minimalist” winemaking techniques craft wines of balance, elegance and distinction. For Morgan Winery, this single-minded focus has produced a record of consistent, category leading, award winning wines.

Nestled in the heart of Carmel at the Crossroads Shopping Center, Taste Morgan brings family winegrowing history to life through a relaxed tasting experience. We welcome you to taste through a flight of our locally grown and produced wines, also offered by the glass with small savory bites. No reservations are required, and dogs are welcome!

Marked by an unmistakable deep purple hue and savory aromatics, Syrah makes an intense, powerful and often age-worthy red. Native to the Northern Rhône, Syrah achieves its maximum potential in the steep village of Hermitage and plays an important component in the Red Rhône Blends of the south, adding color and structure to Grenache and Mourvèdre. Syrah is the most widely planted grape of Australia and is important in California and Washington. Sommelier Secret—Such a synergy these three create together, the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre trio often takes on the shorthand term, “GSM.”

The largest and perhaps most varied of California’s wine-growing regions, the Central Coast produces a good majority of the state's wine. This vast California wine district stretches from San Francisco all the way to Santa Barbara along the coast, and reaches inland nearly all the way to the Central Valley.

Encompassing an extremely diverse array of climates, soil types and wine styles, it contains many smaller sub-AVAs, including San Francisco Bay, Monterey, the Santa Cruz Mountains, Paso Robles, Edna Valley, Santa Ynez Valley and Santa Maria Valley.

While the Central Coast California wine region could probably support almost any major grape varietiy, it is famous for a few Central Coast reds and whites. Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel are among the major ones. The Central Coast is home to many of the state's small, artisanal wineries crafting unique, high-quality wines, as well as larger producers also making exceptional wines.
