Winemaker Notes

Harvested in the cool of the morning and softly pressed. Fermented slowly in stainless steel tanks at cool temperatures to preserve the elegant and refined Sauvignon Blanc aromas. Aromas of passionfruit, elderflower, gooseberry, and fresh mint laced with a delicate white flower element lead to punchy palate with guava and lime. A classical edgy style delivers beautiful line and length: a true Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc.

Critical Acclaim

All Vintages
D 92
Kaffir lime, hints of guava and elderflower merge seamlessly onto the palate. Juicy, aromatic and restrained passion fruit softened with a creamy delicate balance.
WS 91
Wine Spectator

Intense guava and passion fruit notes mingle with vetiver aromatics on a light, juicy and succulent frame, with citrus and pineapple notes on the crisp finish.

Mount Fishtail Wines Mount Fishatil Mountain Range Winery Image

High above the plains of Marlborough, New Zealand’s premium wine growing region for Sauvignon Blanc, one can see Mount Fishtail’s peak standing as a sentinel looking over the many quality vineyards in the area. This double peaked mountain is an inspiring omen and lead to a wine being released under its name.

Marlborough, on the South Island of New Zealand, has gained world recognition for its Sauvignon Blanc wines, grown on alluvial soils. Extensive sunshine hours (over 2500 per annum) and cool nights are the perfect background for this crisp and clean wine with ripe tropical overtones. Superb structure and length, through balanced acid and exquisite fruit concentration, enhance the lime characters so distinctive of the Marlborough region on this wine.

Being a family-run business, control over quality is truly ‘hands on”. Through every day personal involvement, a focus on quality, and a commitment to wine lovers, makes this a labour of love.

Mount Fishtail’s philosophy is: “the best fertilizer is the foot of the farmer”.

An icon and leading region of New Zealand's distinctive style of Sauvignon blanc, Marlborough has a unique terroir, making it ideal for high quality grape production (of many varieties). Despite some common generalizations, which could be fairly justified given that Marlborough is responsible for 90% of New Zealand's Sauvignon blanc production, the wines from this region are actually anything but homogenous. At the northern tip of New Zealand’s South Island, the vineyards of Marlborough benefit from well-draining, stony soils, a dry, sunny climate and wide temperature fluctuations between day and night, a phenomenon that supports a perfect balance between berry ripeness and acidity.

The region’s king variety, Sauvignon blanc, is beloved for its pungent, aromatic character with notes of exotic tropical fruit, freshly cut grass and green bell pepper along with a refreshing streak of stony minerality. These wines are made in a wide range of styles, and winemakers take advantage of various clones, vineyard sites, fermentation styles, lees-stirring and aging regimens to differentiate their bottlings, one from one another.

Also produced successfully here are fruit-forward Pinot noirs (especially where soils are clay-rich), elegant Riesling, Pinot gris and Gewürztraminer.

Capable of a vast array of styles, Sauvignon Blanc is a crisp, refreshing variety that equally reflects both terroir and varietal character. Though it can vary depending on where it is grown, a couple of commonalities always exist—namely, zesty acidity and intense aromatics. This variety is of French provenance. Somm Secret—Along with Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon Blanc is a proud parent of Cabernet Sauvignon. That green bell pepper aroma that all three varieties share is no coincidence—it comes from a high concentration of pyrazines (herbaceous aromatic compounds) inherent to each member of the family.
