Winemaker Notes

This hand crafted 100% Cabernet offers a voluptuous expression of mountain winegrowing, showing how the whole can be greater than the sum of its parts. In both the aromatics and on the palate, complexity abounds as it unfolds to reveal nuances from every Mike Smith attention to detail. This 800 ft elevation Pritchard Hill neighbor combines power and elegance from start to finish. Aromas of boysenberry, black cherry, espresso and hints of premium toasted French Oak jump from the glass revealing a multi-dimensional mouthfeel that is integrated, textured and layered. The tannins are detailed but prominent which marry well with the belly of ripe fruit this wine carries. The finish is where this wine really shines, wave after exhilarating wave of fruit, spice and other complexities. Age this beauty for 4-5 years to take the edge off and integrate hidden nuances. A stunning example of hand-craft winemaking and mountain terroir.

An elegant example of Napa Valley Cabernet is the 2014 Three Twins Vineyard, which comes from a site in Conn Valley and is a tiny production release. Offering a nuanced style in its crème de cassis, dried flowers, lead pencil and graphite aromatics, it’s ethereally textured, light on its feel and impeccably balanced, with medium to full-bodied depth and richness. It’s already impossible to resist, and shows the vintage style, yet I suspect it’s going to evolve gracefully on its balance and purity.

The least expensive Cabernet Sauvignon is the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Three Twins Vineyard, from a site located in Conn Valley not far from Seavey Vineyard. This is a small production cuvée of only 100 cases. The wine shows dusty/loamy soil notes, underbrush, nice blackcurrant and black cherry fruit and a touch of Asian plum. It is ripe, heady, medium to full-bodied and ideal for drinking over the next 12-15 years.

One of the most prestigious wines of the world capable of great power and grace, Napa Valley Cabernet is a leading force in the world of fine, famous, collectible red wine. Today the Napa Valley and Cabernet Sauvignon are so intrinsically linked that it is difficult to discuss one without the other. But it wasn’t until the 1970s that this marriage came to light; sudden international recognition rained upon Napa with the victory of the Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon in the 1976 Judgement of Paris.

Cabernet Sauvignon undoubtedly dominates Napa Valley today, covering half of the land under vine, commanding the highest prices per ton and earning the most critical acclaim. Cabernet Sauvignon’s structure, acidity, capacity to thrive in multiple environs and ability to express nuances of vintage make it perfect for Napa Valley where incredible soil and geographical diversity are found and the climate is perfect for grape growing. Within the Napa Valley lie many smaller sub-AVAs that express specific characteristics based on situation, slope and soil—as a perfect example, Rutherford’s famous dust or Stags Leap District's tart cherry flavors.
