Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

You will be dazzled by the freshness and crispness of this bone-dry cuvée; it's the driest Gewürz Navarro has ever bottled, but features a rounded mouthfeel, a result of Navarro's sur lie aging regime.

Packed with apples, peaches and raspberries, this light-bodied wine was aged in large oak casks and is quite fruity without being at all sweet. It has very good balance, is thirst-quenching but not filling, and will pair well with a range of seafood, salads and lighter main dishes.

Navarro Vineyards, California
Our family has been growing grapes, in the Anderson Valley in coastal Mendocino since 1973. Since our production of wine and non-alcoholic grape juice is small, you probably will not find them in your local store. Consolidation and globalization are sweeping the wine business but mega-farming is not particularly conducive to crafting distinctive wines. Navarro is tiny and we don't base decisions on expediency or efficiency. We hand hoe on hillsides, punch-down fermenting juice in small bins and painstakingly train each stray grape shoot into its proper place on the trellis.

Gewürztraminer, an expressive and aromatically distinctive white grape variety, is considered a noble variety in the Alsace region of France, and produces wonderful wines in the mountainous Alto Adige region of NE Italy. Generally this grape grows well in cooler regions and its natural intensity makes it a great ally for flavorful cuisine such as Indian, Middle Eastern or Moroccan. Somm Secret—Because of a charming perfume and tendency towards slight sweetness, Gewürztraminer makes for an excellent gateway wine for those who love sweet wines but want to venture into the realm of drier whites.

Originally a source of oenological sustenance for gold-seeking miners of the mid-1800s, the Sierra Foothills was the first region in California to produce wines from European grape varieties. Located between Sacramento and the Nevada border, this area’s immigrant settlers chose to forgo growing the then-ubiquitous Mission grape and instead brought with them superior vines from the Old World to plant alongside mining camps.

Zinfandel has been the most important variety of this region since its inception, taking on a spicy character with brambly fruit and firm structure. Amador and El Dorado counties, benefiting from the presence of volcanic and granite soils, are home to the best examples. Bold, robust Rhône Blends and Barbera are also important regional specialties.
