Winemaker Notes

Made from the Hondarrubi Zuri (white varietal) and Hondarrubi Beltza (red varietal) grapes, this could the most pure, beautiful, and all around perfect aperitif available. Naturally low in alcohol, clocking in at about 11%, and accented by a bracing acidity, this wine could stoke the most stifled appetite, and is incredibly versatile with food pairings, especially seafood and cured meats.

In my way of thinking, wine does not always have to be so cerebral and it does not have to be so serious. I often enjoy wines the most when I am just sipping away, engaged in conversation and savoring the moment. The 2014 Nicolas Ulacia e Hijos Ulacia Getariako Txakolina is one of my favorites "in the moment" wines. Let's toast to the pleasures of life. Medium straw color, racy aromas of ripe citrus and savory earth; light to medium bodied, crisp on the palate; dry, fine acidity, well balanced; mineral and citrus in the flavors; lively aftertaste. Drinking supremely now. I would like to have this one with a plate of raw oysters, a good friend, and the ocean in the background. (Tasted: January 21, 2016, San Francisco, CA)

There are hundreds of white grape varieties grown throughout the world. Some are indigenous specialties capable of producing excellent single varietal wines. Each has its own distinct viticultural characteristics, as well as aroma and flavor profiles.

On the southern edge of the rocky Bay of Biscay in northern Spain, this is Basque country and home to the refreshing and slightly effervescent (usually) white wine, Txakoli. Three subregions compose the larger one: Getariako Txakolina, Bizkaiko Txakolina and Arabako Txakolina. While Hondarribi Zuri and Hondarrabi Beltza are the main grape varieties, other French varieties are scattered throughout the region.
