Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

Bright straw yellow color with greenish shimmer. Intense bouquet of white peach, minerals, lemon and white flowers, with delicate spicy tones and impressions of nutmeg. The taste is fresh, vibrant and aromatic, with dominant flavors of peach and lemon and a long pleasant mineral finish.

Ideal with appetizers, light starters, boiled and grilled fish. Excellent with Asian cuisine, especially Thai and Malaysian fish recipes, like Laska soup.

Pronounced aromas of grapefruit, apricot and yellow peach follow through the tangy, savory palate along with ginger and saline mineral notes. It's absolutely delicious and pure drinking joy, with crisp acidity and a bitter almond close.

The 2020 Müller-Thurgau is understated, as wet stone gives way to pretty white flowers and freshly sliced pear. This is round and pliant in feel, with a mix of tart citrus and salty minerals that balance but also slowly saturate the senses. It tapers off floral and long with a salty flourish and a spritz of lime. Give the 2020 Müller-Thurgau a year to settle down and come fully into focus.

Pacherhof Winemaker Andreas Huber Winery Image

Originally there were only three farms in the surrounding of Neustift, one of which was the Pacherhof. The farm is referenced in documents dating to long before Bishop Hartmann founded the Neustift Abbey in 1142. The Pacherhof family bore the surname of Pacher until 1849 when one of Andreas Pacher’s four daughters, Maria, married the winemaker Josef Huber, who brought both his name and the art of viniculture to the Pacherhof farm.

Josef Huber and farmer Johann Huber from Elvas were the wine pioneers of the Eisack valley. After many journeys of discovery which took them as far as the Netherlands, they experimented with numerous varieties of grapes and concluded that Sylvaner, Pinot Gris and Gewürztraminer grapes were ideal for the soil and steep slopes of these lands. Josef Huber also planted the first Kerner grapes in the Eisack Valley. Although they went largely unnoticed at first, these grape varietals went on to become the choice of many and are now the flagships of the wine-growing industry in the Eisack valley. Click here for more information on Pacher-Hof’s vineyard in Neustift.

Today, the Pacherhof wine-growing estate is managed by Andreas Huber, great-grandson of Josef Huber. Andreas cultivates eight varieties of white grape on the 8 hectares of vineyard in the Eisack Valley, presses them in the hotel’s own wine cellar and markets them himself. His dry wines are greatly appreciated for their gentle fruitiness and purity, and find a ready market in South Tyrol, Italy, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, Denmark and the USA.

Müller-Thurgau is a white grape variety created by Hermann Müller in the Swiss Canton of Thurgau in 1882. He crossed Riesling with the table grape, Madeleine Royale, following an ambition to make a delightful drinking wine from an easier-to-grow vine than Riesling. When done right, Müller-Thurgau is a full-bodied, floral white with a refreshing, crisp quality. Somm Secret—Worldwide, Müller-Thurgau is one of the most widely planted of the new breed of grapes created since the 19th century.
