Winemaker Notes

Uncork a bottle of real Organic Merlot. The winery doesn't stop halfway when it comes to bringing you organic wine. It’s not just grown organically, but processed organically. The Organic Merlot is food-friendly and fruity with gentle tannins and a smooth finish— all from organically-grown grapes with no added sulfites or other synthetic preservatives. Enjoy with blue-veined cheeses, braised greens, or grilled mushrooms. Sustainability is a way of life for this family winery, and they invite you to join them. Pacific Redwood Merlot is acceptable for vegans.

This hearty, robust wine offers appealing black-pepper and black-olive aromas followed by nicely ripe black-cherry and dark-chocolate flavors. Not a wimpy Merlot, it has moderate tannins and good balance.

Pacific Redwood, California

Pacific Redwood is a third-generation family-owned and operated winery located at the pristine headwaters of the Russian River in Redwood Valley, Mendocino County, California. At Pacific Redwood, they combine the best of modern and traditional winemaking methods to showcase distinctive varietal flavors. Through minimal manipulation in the cellar, the wine is allowed to express the authentic character of our soils and climate. For over three decades, Pacific Redwood has been a vanguard in crafting wine without added sulfites, a synthetic preservative added to most other wines (even wines made with organically grown grapes!) that can cause adverse allergic reactions in some people. Their organic and Biodynamic farming methods encourage care for the soil, groundwater, and wildlife, promoting rich biodiversity in the vineyard. Ninety percent of the land is held as unspoiled natural habitat with a diverse mix of native plants and animals. As stewards of the land, emphasis is to produce organic and Biodynamic wine of the highest quality while caring for planet and palate alike.

With generous fruit and supple tannins, Merlot is made in a range of styles from everyday-drinking to world-renowned and age-worthy. Merlot is the dominant variety in the wines from Bordeaux’s Right Bank regions of St. Emilion and Pomerol, where it is often blended with Cabernet Franc to spectacular result. Merlot also frequently shines on its own, particularly in California’s Napa Valley. Somm Secret—As much as Miles derided the variety in the 2004 film, Sideways, his prized 1961 Château Cheval Blanc is actually a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc.

Reaching up California's coastline and into its valleys north of San Francisco, the North Coast AVA includes six counties: Marin, Solano, Napa, Sonoma, Mendocino and Lake. While Napa and Sonoma enjoy most of the glory, the rest produce no shortage of quality wines in an intriguing and diverse range of styles.

Climbing up the state's rugged coastline, the chilly Marin County, just above the City and most of Sonoma County, as well as Mendocino County on the far north end of the North Coast successfully grow cool-climate varieties like Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and in some spots, Riesling. Inland Lake County, on the other hand, is considerably warmer, and Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel and Sauvignon Blanc produce some impressive wines with affordable price tags.
