Penfolds Koonunga Hill Shiraz 2009
The Penfolds Koonunga Hill Shiraz is a wine that clearly illustrates the strengths of the Penfolds multi-regional blending philosophy. While the heart of this wine lies in the Barossa Valley, top grade fruit from McLaren Vale, Padthaway, Langhorne Creek and Coonawarra also contribute to its beautifully consistent quality.
The first Koonunga Hill Shiraz Cabernet was made in 1976, and immediately gained a reputation for outstanding value. Medium red-purple, it has a light- to medium-bodied palate with red and black fruits and fine tannins. An attractive, early-drinking style, and terrific value. If you want a retrospective look at the early Koonunga Hills, choose the Koonunga Seventy Six from restaurant wine lists (it is available nowhere else).
