Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

Floral notes, sweet pear, grapefruit and tangerine fill the nose, while spicy oak notes add a toasty smokiness. Stony, mineral highlights are pronounced in the mouth, complemented by citrus flavors and a creamy texture. With appealing lively flavors, this wine exhibits the terroir and clonal selections of the vineyard reflected in the high-toned mineral quality evident in its flavors and bright finish. Delicious now, La Carriere will drink well for 4-6 years.

his wine comes from our newest vineyard on the Peter Michael estate-La Carriere. This name, the French word for "the quarry", aptly describes both the land's bowl shape and its soils with their multiple layers of rocks. At elevations between 1600 and 1800 feet, and on slopes approaching forty percent, the vineyard has ideal southern and southeastern exposures. The vineyard is influenced by cooling marine breezes and has soils that are shallow, providing low fertility-factors advantageous in producing world-class Chardonnay.

In making clonal selections for La Carrière, our goal was to produce a wine whose flavors would be accentuated by exceptional high-toned mineral aspects and elegance. We selected the Dijon clones from Burgundy because they possess the multi-dimensional complexity desired for making such a wine.

Peter Michael, California
Peter Michael Winery Image
In 1982 Sir Peter and Lady Margaret Michael built the Peter Michael Winery on a square mile of rocky volcanic ridges that form the western face of Mount St. Helena in Knights Valley, Sonoma County, California. The estate vineyards rest on steep hillsides ranging in elevation from 1100 to nearly 2000 feet. Of the nearly 600 estate acres, only about 20% are planted to grapes. Peter Michael Winery is best known for single-vineyard and estate grown Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and a Cabernet Sauvignon cuvee of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The Peter Michael Winery remains true to its commitment to growing classic grape varieties in small mountain vineyards in order to produce great wines using classical winemaking techniques. Given this covenant to the product, only a limited quantity will ever be available.
