Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

Bright, light straw yellow. Intense aromas of yellow apples, juicy pears, tangerines and freshly ground white pepper. The fine flavors on the palate are supported by an elegant body and a fruity acidity. Veltliner typical reverberation!

Pair with poached freshwater fish, delicate soft cheese, pasta dishes, appetizers.

Softly scented notes of ripe, yellow pears play on the nose. On the palate they become lusciously mouth-filling with their unobtrusive, friendly softness. There is a backbone of freshness and wonderful depth of lemon, with pear-scented concentration.

Petra Unger, Other Europe
Unger was founded in 1987 by Dr. Wolfgang Unger and is now operated by his daughter Petra, and Konrad Hackl. Petra Unger, member of the “Traditionsweingüter” and “11 women and their wines”, cultivates 11 hectares of vineyards in the Kremstal-region with mainly Grüner Veltliner and Riesling vines. Situated on the eastern frontier of the Wachau region, where the steep and narrow Danube valley opens into gently rolling hillsides, Petra has a particular talent to optimize the various microclimates and soil types in her vineyards. She continuously produces characterful wines, which have great fruit extraction, balance and elegance.

Petra Unger’s range of wines include Classic and Reserve bottlings. The Classic wines have a maximum alcohol content of 12.5%, are delightfully fresh and clean with a fruit-forward, elegant style. The Reserve wines are ripened longer and may slightly exceed 12.5% alcohol. These dry wines are full bodied, rich and rewarding delivering long flavors that express a sense of place.

Fun to say and delightfully easy to drink, Grüner Veltliner calls Austria its homeland. While some easily quaffable Grüners come in a one-liter—a convenient size—many high caliber single vineyard bottlings can benefit from cellar aging. Somm Secret—About 75% of the world’s Grüner Veltliner comes from Austria but the variety is gaining ground in other countries, namely Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and the United States.

The region of considerable geologic diversity and microclimates, Kremstal extends virtually without border east from Wachau along the Danube River. Its magnificent terraced and rocky vineyards in the west alongside Wachau include some of Austria’s most esteemed Riesling vineyards, the (Steiner) Hund and Pfaffenberg, as well as Kögl and Wachtberg nearer to the city of Krems. After Krems, the vineyards become excessively steep upstream around Senftenberg where Riesling and Grüner Veltliner thrive. Grüner Veltliner does best from here east where the soils become a mix of sand, gravel and loess.

Grüner Veltliner and Riesling together comprise two thirds of all of the Kremstal vineyards; the region itself represents about five percent of Austria’s total vineyard area.
