    Somm Note

    Winemaker Notes

The genuine expression of Sangiovese from Romagna. Fruity, smooth, with a bright ruby red colour linked to an intense and fine red fruit perfume. In the palate, the freshness goes together with soft tannins and violet, cherry and plum notes, with a long and spicy aftertaste

Pair with hand-made pasta, pigeon ravioli with rosemary and red wine sauce, roasts, grilled steak, or mature cheese.

The Ravaioli family has guided and developed Poderi dal Nespoli through several generations. Poderi dal Nespoli was established in 1929 by Attilio Nespoli, who took on his father’s wine merchant business and invested in the first plot of land. The company has been developed throughout the post-war period and now the next generations Ravaioli have taken the reins and continue the family business. Poderi dal Nespoli is located in the Bidente River Valley, a gem set just inland of the “Romagna Riviera” almost hidden away. The valley connects Forlì to the Apennine mountainsides between Romagna and Tuscany. Over time this ancient valley has served as an important connection between Romagna and Tuscany. The winemaking team at Nespoli specializes in small lot artisanal Sangiovese production and have twice been awarded the coveted Gambero Rosso Tre Bicchieri for their efforts.

Among Italy's elite red grape varieties, Sangiovese has the perfect intersection of bright red fruit and savory earthiness and is responsible for the best red wines of Tuscany. While it is best known as the chief component of Chianti, it is also the main grape in Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and reaches the height of its power and intensity in the complex, long-lived Brunello di Montalcino. Somm Secret—Sangiovese doubles under the alias, Nielluccio, on the French island of Corsica where it produces distinctly floral and refreshing reds and rosés.

The hilly, eastern side of Emilia-Romagna is now separated into 12 subzones defined by elevation and soil types. Within these, vine growers are starting to differentiate ideal locations for high quality Sangiovese as well as Albana, the region’s white grape. Albana has proven itself via the finer passito and botrytized versions; dry versions are also making a name for themselves.
