    Winemaker Notes

This is 100% Montepulciano, from a single vineyard in Chieti located less than half a mile from the Adriatic Sea. The grapes were handpicked and fermented in stainless steel tanks with frequent pumpovers to soften tannins. Don't be fooled though as this is not some simple, light Montepulciano. Producers in Abruzzo were faced with a real challenge in 2016. A severe April frost caused damage to some vineyards. To make matters worse, summer never really arrived. Sunny days were interrupted by periods of dreary grey skies and annoying misty rain; this situation persisted into harvest. Despite the difficult weather conditions throughout the growing cycle, this site was still able to produce healthy, well-ripened grapes albeit with a bit less sugar than previous vintages.

This has a lovely purple color to it and a violet hue, with ripe plum and blackberry aromas. In the mouth the black fruit is joined by some darker chocolate notes and a hint of spice. This is smooth and drinkable, great value for drinking now but enough grip to lay down for a couple of years.

    Poggio Anima, Italy
Poggio Anima is a joint venture between Montalcino superstar Riccardo Campinoti of Le Ragnaie and his importer Vine Street Imports. The idea is pretty simple: to source the best vineyards from existing relationships and produce a real wine that conveys a place and a grape. These wines are not bulk wines, nor leftover juice from a winery, but long term contracts that we have signed with reputable growers.

Poggio Anima translates to "Hill of Soul." Going back to the concept of Poggio Anima we wanted to capture the ‘soul’ of each vineyard and grape. No manipulation, no water, sugar, etc. Just the pure expression of the fruit and site. One could argue that many wines have a "soul," but very few weeknight wines share this. Poggio Anima has come along to change this.

Montepulciano is the second most planted red variety in Italy after Sangiovese, though it is achieves its highest potential in the region of Abruzzo. Consistently enticing and enjoyable, Montepulciano enjoys great popularity throughout central and southern Italy as well. A tiny bit grows with success in California, Argentina and Australia. Somm Secret—Montepulciano is also the name of a village in Tuscany where, confusingly, they don’t grow the Montepulciano grape at all! Sangiovese shines in yet another Tuscan village, here making the reputable wine called Vino Nobile di Montepulciano.

A warm, Mediterranean vine-growing paradise, in Abruzzo, the distance from mountains to seaside is relatively short. The Apenniness, which run through the center of Italy, rise up on its western side while the Adriatic Sea defines its eastern border.

Wine composition tends to two varieties: Abruzzo’s red grape, Montepulciano and its white, Trebbiano. Montepulciano d’Abruzzo can come in a quaffable, rustic and fruity style that generally drinks best young. It is also capable of making a more serious style, where oak aging tames its purely wild fruit.

Trebbiano in Abruzzo also comes in a couple of varieties. Trebbiano Toscana makes a simple and fruity white. However when meticulously tended, the specific Trebbiano d’Abruzzo-based white wines can be complex and long-lived.

In the region’s efforts to focus on better sites and lower yields, vine acreage has decreased in recent years while quality has increased.
