Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

40% Tempranillo, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot, aged in French and American oak barrels for twelve months. Vibrant appearance of deep ruby. Red fruit aromas of currant and cherry with hints of vanilla and coconut. Generous palate of fruit, balanced and expressing nuance in a persistent finish.

Bold black-fruit aromas are pure and inviting. Overall, this blend of Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot is flush in feel, balanced and full of wild berry and plum flavors. On the finish, fully present acidity supports oak and chocolaty notes. This is an exemplary large-production Spanish red.

Bodegas Príncipe de Viana was created in 1983 as a banner project of Caja Rural de Navarra, an agricultural lending institution founded to provide financial assistance for the sustainable development of Navarra’s important farming sector. Reflecting wine’s nobility among agricultural products, the project takes its name from an historic Navarran title of Spanish royal succession dating to 1423.

Notoriously food-friendly, long-lasting and Spain’s most widely planted grape, Tempranillo is the star variety of red wines from Rioja and Ribera del Duero. The Rioja terms Joven, Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva indicate both barrel and bottle time before release. Traditionally blended in Rioja with Garnacha, plus a bit of Mazuelo (Carignan) and Graciano, the Tempranillo in Ribera del Duero typically stands alone. Somm Secret—Tempranillo claims many different names depending on location. In Penedès, it is called Ull de Llebre and in Valdepeñas, goes by Cencibel. Known as Tinta Roriz in Portugal, Tempranillo plays an important role in Port wine.

Just north of Spain’s famous Rioja region, Navarra excels in the production of full and fruit-dominant reds and good quality, dry rosés. Garnacha holds most of the land under vine, with Tempranillo coming in second place.
