Winemaker Notes

In an unmarked territory, concealed in the southwestern hills bordering Oakville, lies Promontory - remote, raw, and replete with uncharted potential. The quiet quest of a quarter century, the lands of Promontory manifest the hallmarks of an unparalleled winegrowing estate, diversity of soil, elevation, exposition and climate, all within a single and dramatic expanse. This is the newest project of Harlan Estate's Bill Harlan.

Professional Ratings

The 2009 Promontory is a magnificent Bordeaux-styled red offering up notes of burning embers, scorched earth (not terribly dissimilar from a top Pessac-Leognan such as La Mission Haut-Brion), black fruits, loamy undertones of minerality, and hints of camphor and background oak. Dense, masculine, rich and full, this 2009 is built for the long-term, although for a 2009, the tannins are remarkably well-integrated, giving the wine definition and structure. This 2009 should age for 25+ years.

Promontory, California
In an unmarked territory, hidden beyond the upper reaches of Oakville’s southwestern borderlands, Promontory looms remote, raw, and replete with uncharted potential. Steeped in history yet largely overlooked in the twentieth century, the scale of this undiscovered territory evokes the impression of a small national park. These lands encompass an entire watershed, and embody all the hallmarks of an unparalleled winegrowing estate - diversity of soil, elevation, exposition, and climate – all within a single and dramatic expanse.

Building a dream of this scale requires a commitment much greater than that of one individual or even one lifetime. It is a pursuit that requires the experience and wisdom of the founding generation, the preparedness and conviction of the current generation, with consideration for the promise of the next.

Promontory extends their pioneering spirit of discovering something that can reveal, just possibly, a glimpse of the sublime.
