Winemaker Notes

The Quilceda Creek 2008 Palengat Proprietary Red Wine displays the wonderful aromatic perfume of the Horse Heaven Hills A.V.A. This vineyard was planted in 1997-2002 on deep, consistent Sagehill series soil. It is located on an ideal south facing slope on Phinney Hill, right next to world famous Champoux Vineyard. The vineyard is managed by Paul Champoux and is 8.5 acres in size with 59% of the vines being high-density (2270 vines/acre). Having this many vines per acre fills in the mid-palate often missing from varieties such as Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. This source allows us to make wines with these varieties that are dense, rich, full-bodied and complex. The wine showcases floral violet, plum and cassis fruit with complex layers of anise, black tea and soy. Aged in 100% new French Oak for 22 months, it is a blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Cabernet Franc, 7% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot. Drink now - 2030.

The 2008 Palengat Proprietary Red Wine is made up of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Cabernet Franc, with the balance Merlot and Petit Verdot. The fruit was sourced entirely from the Palengat Vineyard. Pain grille, pencil lead, Asian spices, incense, violets, dried herbs, black currant, and blackberry aromas compose the bouquet of this impeccably balanced offering. It opens in the glass to reveal plush, succulent flavors, superb concentration, plenty of ripe tannin, and at least 4-5 years of aging potential. It will deliver optimum drinking from 2015 to 2028.

Quilceda's single-vineyard Bordeaux-style blend is 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Cabernet Franc, 7% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot, from a vineyard just across the road from Champoux. Dusty and fragrant, it suggests soft leather, toast, caramel and coconut, hiding its fruit at first in a wash of luxurious barrel flavors. That fruit emerges with some hours of decanting, a tart and racy mix of berry and sweet tomato.

Quilceda Creek, Washington
Quilceda Creek Paul Golitzin Winery Image

Established in 1978 by Alex and Jeannette Golitzin with the first vintage produced in 1979, Quilceda Creek is Washington State’s 12th bonded winery after Prohibition, but the family’s storied history with winemaking dates back to the late 1800s. Family owned and operated and one of Washington State’s premier wineries, Quilceda Creek has dedicated itself to producing world-class Cabernet Sauvignon. The wines of Quilceda Creek have been an expression of five vineyards in the coveted Horse Heaven Hills and Red Mountain American Viticultural Areas (AVA). Champoux Vineyard is one of the oldest vineyards in Washington State and the Cabernet Sauvignon grapes grown there have produced five of Quilceda Creek’s perfect 100-point wines. Grapes for the sixth 100-point wine were sourced from Galitzine Vineyard in the Red Mountain AVA. Today, Paul Golitzin oversees all aspects of winemaking and vineyard operations, pursuing the same standard of excellence that brought Quilceda Creek to world prominence.
