  This Syrah comes from the Reynavaan family's second vineyard, Foothills in the Sun, planted in 2008. This vintage, cofermented with five percent viognier, flirts with Syrah's more feral nature in scents of olive, smoke and dried beef, while shades of mocha and clove come up from behind. There's fruit too, but it remains quiet, in deference to the savory notes, the flavors delivered in a generous, luxurious texture that's mouthwatering, fresh and harmonious.

  Graceful, broad-shouldered and expressive, focusing the tapenade-laced plum and spice flavors on a supple frame against powdery tannins. Lingers effortlessly on the expressive finish. Drink now through 2023.

  A wine to hold for a year or two is the 2013 Syrah In the Hills. Made from 95% Syrah and 5% Viognier, aged 12 months in 25% new French oak, it offers perfumed notes of mulled red and black fruits, bacon fat, violets and pepper in a medium-bodied, elegant, even pretty style. Like the Syrah Foothills Reserve, give it a few years and enjoy through 2026.
