Connoisseurs' Guide
If at first inclining a bit more to ripeness than fruit but opening to show more fruity intensity and focus in short order, Rodney Strong’s 2016 Reserve is, when given a bit of time in the glass, a richly flavored wine whose sweet oak, loam and chocolaty extras make for an involving Cabernet that turns out to be chock-full of curranty fruit. Its supple mouthfeel is sure to tempt early drinking, and, while it is not too tannic to serve as an appealing foil to typical Cabernet fare for those short on patience, it has the structure to evolve and become even more polished if afforded three or four more years on the cork and will be in fine drinking shape for three or four more.

Wine Enthusiast
Brimming in turned earth, sage and cedar, this reserve wine is robust and made from grapes grown at considerable elevation at sites like Cooley, Brothers and Rockaway. Densely packed blackberries, licorice and cocoa nibs are ripe and richly layered, with a plush finish.

Founded by wine industry pioneer, Rod Strong, in 1959, Rodney Strong Vineyards is now owned by the Kleins, a farming-based family that prides itself on land stewardship and a relentless push for superior wine quality from Sonoma County. After purchasing the company in 1989, Tom Klein began the endeavor that today brings together excellent vineyards, the industry's finest winemaking equipment, and exceptional talent. The winery farms and sources grapes from vineyards throughout Sonoma County, focusing on Alexander Valley, Russian River Valley and Chalk Hill. Rodney Strong Vineyards is best known for its estate-bottled and vineyard-designated wines, and is also recognized for their sustainable and Fish Friendly Farming, dedication to solar energy production and becoming carbon neutral in 2009.
While Sonoma County is acclaimed—and rightfully so—for its Chardonnays, Pinot Noirs, and Zinfandels, it also produces exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon. Of the region’s 18 American Viticultural Areas, only a handful produce top-notch Cabernet Sauvignon. These appellations include Alexander Valley, Knights Valley, Sonoma Valley and Dry Creek Valley. Sonoma Cabernet Sauvignons made in these appellations can offer a complex array of aromas and flavors. Fruit notes such as blackberry, blackcurrant, cassis, black cherry and raspberry often are accompanied by hints of graphite, dusty earth, cigar box, toast and vanilla. The varietal has a rich history in Sonoma, and some of these Cabernet Sauvignons and Cabernet-based blends rival the best from Napa Valley.
