This is gorgeous, with lush linzer torte, boysenberry pâte de fruit and plum sauce notes that captivate, while anise, Lapsang souchong tea and singed apple wood notes fill in the background. The long finish is fleshy and driven.
The 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Reserve reveals a boatload of roasted Provencal herbs intermixed with lavender, licorice, cassis, kirsch, cedar, underbrush and pepper. In addition to great fruit, it possesses fabulous concentration, a full-bodied mouthfeel and a sensational, 40-second finish.

The Central Coast has carved out a niche with Rhône blends based on Grenache and Syrah, while Mendocino has found success with Alsatian varieties such as Riesling and Gewürztraminer.
