Winemaker Notes

This is an elegant sensual wine with lush texture, revealing sumptuous flavors of Rainier cherry, pomegranate, and cranberry that combine with Burgundian aromatics of forest floor, orange zest and caramel, finishing with a delicate softness that lingers on the palate.

Professional Ratings

One of the most ambitious wine projects on the planet, this bottling from Catalina Island shows rich complexity on the nose, with aromas of red cherries, smoked pork, tight graphite, a hint of maple and then violets, lilacs and other purple flowers. The flavors are soft with red and purple fruit, but solidly seasoned with anise, black pepper and spicy herbs, with all elements extremely well integrated.

Rusack Rusack Vineyard Winery Image

Rusack was established in 1995 by Geoff Rusack and Alison Wrigley Rusack with a commitment to creating world-class wines. In the years since then, this dedication to quality has meant some dramatic changes at the winery.

The most visible change is in the vineyard. Following the 2001 harvest, many of the original vines were pulled out and replanted under the guidance of winemaker John Falcone. Utilizing cutting edge technology and taking advantage of Ballard Canyon’s unique terroir, varieties to be grown were carefully chosen and limited to those clones best suited to the microclimate. Syrah, Sangiovese, and Sauvignon Blanc have been planted, along with smaller lots of Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot to be blended into the renowned "Anacapa."

Internationally recognized for gorgeous, pure fruit combined with great elegance, California Pinot noir thrives among the state’s cooler, coastal zones. Characterized by eclectic flavors and aromas of strawberry, black cherry, plum and potpourri with notes of forest floor, mushroom or black tea, the best California Pinot noir boast a supple texture and good acidity, giving them the ability to improve with age.

Credited with the beginning of Pinot noir’s glory in California, two growers, Joe Rochioli and Joseph Swan in the late 1960s independently planted Pinot noir vineyards in the Russian River Valley of Sonoma County. Today Sonoma County remains the leading producer of Pinot noir in the state, and Pinot noir is the leading red grape in the county, achieving its highest potential, in the Russian River Valley and Sonoma Coast.

Other coastal appellations where Pinot noir flourishes include Carneros, Anderson Valley and most of the Central Coast.
