Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

A very perfumed nose of rose petals, dark cherry, rhubarb and wild strawberry with white pepper and cinnamon spice notes. Lovely fresh rose, cherry, plum, and cola on the palate with hints of five spice and cardamom. Smooth, silky tannin with a long succulent finish.

Paris well with roasted chicken, grilled seafood and roasted seasonal vegetables.

One of the most recent buzz words in the wine business is purity and yes, I often use this word and in the 2013 Saintsbury Pinot Noir, this concept is so very appropriate. There is no mistaking what this wine is about as it stays true to this varietal in the Carneros AVA. So as my notes indicate: Pure! Light to medium garnet in color, bright and almost unassuming aromas of wild strawberries with just a hint of savory herbs, excellent focus and persistence; medium bodied, pleasing sweet tannins; crisp and lively on the palate; dry, excellent acidity, well balanced; bright and pure red fruit flavors, slight savory note; long finish, lively aftertaste. This wine holds an allowable amount of Anderson Valley fruit, in addition to grapes from Sonoma Coast, including many of the winery's vineyard designates. Rose petals and a helping of clove mark the entry, followed by savory elements of black tea, tart cherry, blueberry and black pepper on the palate. These continue with subtle force through the finish.

Saintsbury specializes in Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The Chardonnay is fermented and aged in barrels coopered in Burgundy. Three styles of Pinot Noir are produced: "Garnet" is a fresh, lively wine full of cherry and raspberry fruit; the wine simply called Carneros Pinot Noir is a more classic rendition; and the Reserve Pinot Noir is the richest and most fully flavored of the vintage.

As early as the 1970s Carneros became known as a source of terrific Pinot Noir, and was one of the first California regions to gain such a reputation. The combination of sunny days, cooling fog and thin clay soils are tailor-made for the variety. Another factor in Pinot Noir’s prominent place here is vintners’ willingness to experiment widely. The history of the grape in Carneros is marked by continuous research into clonal variations, viticultural techniques and site selection. Careful evaluation over time has revealed a signature flavor profile as well. Complex aromas and flavors of cherry, red berry, spice, earth and cola appear time and again in Carneros Pinot Noir. To this day the appellation remains one of California’s standard bearers for the variety.
