Winemaker Notes

The 2019 could be considered as a classic vintage in Alto Jahuel, the Casa Real 2019 reflects the elegance and great depth of this fantastic vintage which shows great concentration due to higher temperatures during the spring and summer months. This wine has an intense and deep ruby red color, showing pure aromas of blackcurrants, ripe cherries, graphite and soft cedar notes. The mouth is gentle and precise with firm and rounded tannins that drive the backbone and length of

this long and persistent wine.

Professional Ratings

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Casa Real, from Alto Jahuel, spent 20 months in barrels, 83% of them new. Garnet red with purple sheen. The nose presents black currant, blackberry, cedar, balsamic and ashy notes from the aging process as well as orange peel, graphite, and a minty backdrop. The best qualities are the broad, polished tannins and the silky feel. Lingers at length at the back of the mouth, leading to a fruity, complex finish followed by an aftertaste of sour cherry.
  • 93
Densely flavored, but remarkably polished and elegant, this red unfolds around a core of raspberry coulis and rooibos tea flavors, swelling with energy midpalate and gaining details of floral cassis, and chai spices. Ends with tremendous length, displaying suave, well-integrated tannins and an echo of espresso bean. Drink now through 2028.
  • 93
Aromas of green bell pepper, tobacco, and black fruit fill up the bouquet of this smooth wine sourced from old vines in Alto Jahuel. On the palate, hints of spices appear alongside ripe black cherries, plum, blueberry, and oaky flavors. It has firm tannins and lingering chocolate notes on the finish.
  • 93
Savory anise and red peppercorn with herbal black cherries, damsons and undergrowth. This is a tight and bright cabernet on the palate, showing exuberant red berries and firm but round tannins. Fluent, quite long and spicy. Drink or hold.

It doesn't get much more classical than the 2019 Casa Real Cabernet Sauvignon, a textbook example of a Maipo Cabernet with the list of classical descriptors: lead pencil, cedar wood, blackcurrants, mint, balsam, earth and spice. It's juicy and ripe without excess, with 14.5% alcohol, a soft palate and round tannins and a dry finish 14,500 bottles produced. It was bottled in November 2021 after 20 months in barrel, 82% of them new, but the oak is neatly integrated in the wine.

This powerfully structured wine grows at a hillside parcel on Santa Rita’s estate in Alto Jahuel, a massal selection of cabernet planted in the 1970s. Sleek and substantial, balancing sweet black cherry and the bitter-almond tension of oak, this may be youthfully impacted, but it still comes across as friendly. Irina Sargisova, of Brooklyn’s Rooftop Reds winery, was drawn to the floral side of the fruit: “pomegranate and roses,” pointing to the complexity to come with age.

Santa Rita Winery Video

Heritage and enterprise are hallmarks of Santa Rita, one of Chile's premier wine estates. Founded in 1880 by Domingo Fernandez in Chile's Maipo Valley, this historic property was among the first to pioneer plantings of European grape varieties in Chile.

In 1980, it was acquired by its present owner, Ricardo Claro, under whom Santa Rita has reaped the rewards of continuous investment, resulting in a period of impressive growth, during which the winery has consolidated its position in the vanguard of Chile's most successful and innovative estates. Initiatives include the highly successful launch of Santa Rita’s 120 Series of wines and a range of ultra-premium wines, notably the highly acclaimed Casa Real and Triple C. Wide-ranging enhancements embrace the purchase of choice new vineyards, plantings with top quality clones, improved trellising and irrigation, balanced viticulture, restricted yields, later harvesting, individual block farming, small-lot vinification, and an increased emphasis on sustainable agriculture.

Today Santa Rita exports to more than 70 countries worldwide. The property accounts for outstanding vineyards in Chile’s most important appellations - the Maipo Valley; Casablanca; Rapel; Apalta; Leyda and Curico - enabling access to diverse climates and terrain.

A noble variety bestowed with both power and concentration, Cabernet Sauvignon enjoys success all over the globe, its best examples showing potential to age beautifully for decades. Cabernet Sauvignon flourishes in Bordeaux's Medoc where it is often blended with Merlot and smaller amounts of some combination of Cabernet Franc, Malbecand Petit Verdot. In the Napa Valley, ‘Cab’ is responsible for some of the world’s most prestigious, age-worthy and sought-after “cult” wines. Somm Secret—DNA profiling in 1997 revealed that Cabernet Sauvignon was born from a spontaneous crossing of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc in 17th century southwest France.

The Maipo Valley is Chile’s most famous wine region. Set in the country’s Central Valley, it is warm and quite dry, often necessitating the use of irrigation. Alluvial soils predominate but are supplemented with loam and clay.

The climate in Maipo is best-suited for ripe, full-bodied reds like Cabernet Sauvignon (the region’s most widely planted grape), Merlot, Syrah and Carmenère, a Bordeaux variety that has found a successful home in Chile.

White wines are also produced with great prosperity, especially near the cooler coast, include Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.
