Winemaker Notes
Kent Humphrey (Winemaker at Eric Kent Wine Cellars) devotes himself to discovering and purchasing small lots for Sarapo Family and to creating the finished blends. Kent's sister, Renee Humphrey, manages wholesale operations, and Kent’s wife, Colleen Teitgen, handles design and branding.
We call our label Sarapo Family Wines in honor of Kent and Renee’s Italian heritage. Sarapo is their mother’s maiden name, and legend has it that various branches of the family were involved in wine long before they were born. With great admiration for all of the Italian family members who share this vinous history, we give each wine a “family name” inspired by relatives from generations past and present. One thing is certain — today there is always good wine, good food and good cheer at a Sarapo table!
As early as the 1970s Carneros became known as a source of terrific Pinot Noir, and was one of the first California regions to gain such a reputation. The combination of sunny days, cooling fog and thin clay soils are tailor-made for the variety. Another factor in Pinot Noir’s prominent place here is vintners’ willingness to experiment widely. The history of the grape in Carneros is marked by continuous research into clonal variations, viticultural techniques and site selection. Careful evaluation over time has revealed a signature flavor profile as well. Complex aromas and flavors of cherry, red berry, spice, earth and cola appear time and again in Carneros Pinot Noir. To this day the appellation remains one of California’s standard bearers for the variety.
