Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

This is a three bottle set that includes:

2015 Boars' View Pinot Noir: A powerful wine with lush flavors of brambly black fruits and tantalizing notes of cedar, the 2015 Boars’ View Pinot Noir is a spectacular representation of this classic vintage on the Sonoma Coast. Underlying the abundance of black fruits are elegant notes of fresh earth, licorice and night blooming jasmine that burst forth with a few moments in the glass. On the palate, the medium bodied wine shows deep flavors of ripe berries, crème brûlée, vanilla and hint of forest floor. The finish is ample with delicious lingering notes of macerated black cherries and a touch of vanillin oak.

2016 Boars' View Pinot Noir: The 2016 vintage was a return to a more fruitful crop load at the vineyard, while still maintaining small compact cluster size for maximizing skin-to-juice ratio and produced a dark, nuanced, and complex wine. In the glass the 2016 Boars’ View displays a reddish-purple hue. Layered aromatic notes of clove, plum reduction, baking spices, and pine needles complement the fruit forward core. The wine shows a medium palate weight with both delicate and dark notes of finely ground dark chocolate, raspberry compote, anise, lavender oil, and lilac. There is just enough finely integrated tannin and acid to keep the wine structured, leading to an expansive, lingering finish.

2017 Boars' View Pinot Noir: The 2017 vintage was a marvelous continuation of what we saw in 2016 in terms of great concentration and rich fruit character. The vineyard has truly come into its own as of late which the resulting wines prove in abundance. The 2017 Boars’ View Pinot Noir has a deep, gorgeous plum color and inky density. On the palate, the wine offers copious notes of pomegranate and cranberry compote balanced beautifully with darker notes of clove, licorice, and confectionery cocoa. Lofty hints of evergreen and mint round out the complexity and provides a beautiful, ethereal herbal quality that lingers on the palate with a finish that stretches on for miles.

2016 Boars' View Pinot Noir: Moving to the reds, the 2016 Pinot Noir The Coast is drinking beautifully today and offers a complex bouquet of mint laced black cherries, clove, and cinnamon as well as some classic California conifer tree notes. Medium to full-bodied, with outstanding purity of fruit and great balance, drink it over the coming 7-8 years or so.

2017 Boars' View Pinot Noir: Similar levels of forest and spice notes emerge from the 2017 Pinot Noir The Coast, which shows the more focused, savory style of the 2017 vintage nicely. Plenty of black cherry, toasted bread, baking spice, and forest floor, medium to full body, and rock-solid overall balance all make for a beautiful Pinot Noir. It will keep for at least 10-12 years.

2015 Boars' View Pinot Noir: Wildly aromatic, with a medley of wildflower, wild berry, mineral and black tea notes and refined tannins, all deftly proportioned, long and clean.

2016 Boars' View Pinot Noir: Zesty, featuring crunchy acidity that backs the macerated cherry and raspberry flavors. Forest floor notes and hints of hot stone emerge on the spicy finish.

Fred Schrader founded Schrader Cellars in 1998 with a goal of making the best Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon possible. Since then, the brand has gained renown for incredible vineyard sourcing and remarkably gifted winemaker, Thomas Brown. Since its inception, Schrader has achieved a total of twenty-seven 100-point scores from the likes of The Wine Advocate, Wine Spectator, Jeb Dunnuck, and James Suckling.

For more than a decade Schrader Cellars has produced benchmark Cabernet Sauvignon from the most prestigious vineyards in the Napa Valley — notably the first-growth Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard in Oakville, along with Beckstoffer Georges III Vineyard in Rutherford, Beckstoffer Las Piedras in Northwest St. Helena, and newly the Monastery Block To Kalon Vineyard in Oakville. Thomas Brown, a South Carolina native, didn’t grow up in the wine business, but after extensively exploring the wine regions of France, Italy, and Northern California, he knew where he belonged. In 1996, Thomas moved to Napa Valley and began working in a wine shop. Wanting to cut his teeth in winemaking, he began working in acclaimed cellars with industry legends. In 2000, destiny circled around and Thomas met Fred Schrader at the same fine wine shop. Although Thomas had yet to make a bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon, Fred recognized his unwavering passion, fantastic natural ability, and dedication to winemaking, and hired him to do just that for his namesake brand, Schrader. Since then, the duo has developed a portfolio of benchmark Cabernet Sauvignons renowned for their “no holds barred” character. Thomas has achieved unprecedented success in record time and has revealed himself to be a true visionary of wine.

The Sonoma Coast AVA is large in area but, not counting overlapping regions like Russian River Valley, only has a few thousand acres of grapevines—and it’s no wonder. Much of the region is rugged and not easily accessible. Its proximity to the Pacific Ocean’s fog and cool breezes limits the varieties that can be cultivated, but it proves to be an ideal environment for high quality Pinot Noir.

Since fog is a frequent fact of life here, as are heavy marine layers that sometimes bring rain, the best vineyards are wisely planted above the fog line, on picturesque ridges that capture enough sun to provide even ripening. That, with the overnight drop in temperature that reliably preserves acidity, results in fine expressions of Pinot Noir that often receive tremendous critic and consumer praise alike, and are often in high demand.
