Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

Sea Sun Pinot Noir has aromas of cherry, light toasted wood, dry earth, clove and a hint of s'mores. The flavors echo the cherry on the nose, with raspberry on the finish. Bright and fruit-driven, with lush cherries and a strikingly soft texture.

Sea Sun by Charlie Wagner, California
Sea Sun by Charlie Wagner Charlie Wagner - Winemaker Winery Image

Led by Owner and Winemaker Charlie Wagner, Sea Sun Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are created from the singular beauty and character of the California coast. The regions where Sea Sun is sourced have included Monterey, Santa Barbara and Solano Counties. Solano is home to the “hidden gem” of Suisun Valley -- only a 30-minute drive southeast of Napa, Suisun shares a similar maritime climate and is capable of producing outstanding grapes.

All of the coastal regions where we source grapes for Sea Sun provide ideal growing conditions for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, with cooling ocean breezes and an extended growing season that leads to heightened complexity in the wine. These regions also feature subtle differences – as a result, Sea Sun wines are layered with aromas and flavors, holding broad appeal for a wide range of palates.

Internationally recognized for gorgeous, pure fruit combined with great elegance, California Pinot noir thrives among the state’s cooler, coastal zones. Characterized by eclectic flavors and aromas of strawberry, black cherry, plum and potpourri with notes of forest floor, mushroom or black tea, the best California Pinot noir boast a supple texture and good acidity, giving them the ability to improve with age.

Credited with the beginning of Pinot noir’s glory in California, two growers, Joe Rochioli and Joseph Swan in the late 1960s independently planted Pinot noir vineyards in the Russian River Valley of Sonoma County. Today Sonoma County remains the leading producer of Pinot noir in the state, and Pinot noir is the leading red grape in the county, achieving its highest potential, in the Russian River Valley and Sonoma Coast.

Other coastal appellations where Pinot noir flourishes include Carneros, Anderson Valley and most of the Central Coast.
