Winemaker Notes

Wonderful notes of smoke, licorice, leather and incense. A savory and rustic wine with a classic Bordeaux-like personality that presents considerable aging potential but is also easy to enjoy now because of its delicate richness.

Vinous
Seavey's 2014 Merlot is fabulous. Rich, powerful and intense, the 2014 offers notable intensity and richness. Far from an easygoing wine, Seavey's Merlot is a wine that absolutely demands attention. Black cherry, smoke, licorice, leather and incense notes add layers of exuberance, but the Merlot is very young and in need of cellaring. All of the personality of this site come through in a slightly more accessible style than in the Cabernets. This is a gorgeous wine. Don't miss it.
RP 90
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2014 Merlot is soft, round and juicy, with loads of chocolate, cocoa and coffee notes, a medium to full-bodied, plump mouthfeel, fine tannins and a lush, juicy finish. It is a blend of 97% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot, representing 390 cases, and is best drunk over the next 10-12 years.

In the 1870s – when Conn Valley Road was little more than a wagon trail – the land which we now farm was planted with grapes to make a “Claret of high repute.” This wine was judged by the St. Helena Star to be “as fine as one might find anywhere.” Commonly known as the Franco-Swiss Farming Company, this was the pioneering vineyard and winemaking operation of Conn Valley. After roughly thirty years of producing great wines, the company dissolved due to the impact of a phylloxera infestation and Prohibition. For more than a half century, cattle roamed the land and grain was farmed but no more grapes were cultivated until Bill and Mary Seavey acquired the land in 1979. Bill and Mary set out to revive the original vineyard, planting the south-facing hillsides of Conn Valley near Lake Hennessey. By 1990, we had remodeled an 1881 stone dairy barn into a small winery and began producing small quantities of Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. Small blocks of Merlot and Petit Verdot were also added along with a second winery building which includes an underground wine cave.

As Napa Valley’s third most planted grape, Napa Valley Merlot shows time and time again its potential to produce exceptional results. Napa’s vaunted combination of climate, soil and the human factor of winemaking expertise lead to big, ripe, cellar-worthy and world-class versions.

Whether made by itself in single varietal bottlings or as an important role in Bordeaux Blends, Merlot continues a prominent role in this famous region. While Cabernet typically takes the lead role, Merlot’s contribution—even at 10% to 20% or so—is significant indeed. Often described as “the flesh on Cabernet’s bones,” Merlot lends a soft, round and plush character that beautifully complements Cabernet’s linear, full-throttle structure. Its flavors of plums plus subtle herbs and mint also dovetail nicely with Cabernet’s blackberry and cassis.
