Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

The 2001 Seña captures the essential elements of the Seña style: perfect balance, ripe fruit, complexity on the nose and elegance on the palate. A leafy, earthy fragrance provides a rich backdrop for the ripe cherry, blackberry and vanilla bean aromas. The fruit is spicy on the palate, with light herbal notes. Silky smooth tannins give the wine depth and length. Berry fruit and vanilla oak carry through on the soft finish.

Food Match: roasts, grilled meats, game, duck, beef.

Blend: 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc, 4% Carmenere.

Big and woody on first blush, but relaxes to show clove, cinnamon and dry plum-like fruit. More spice and clove on the cedary palate, with a chewy, real-deal mouthfeel. Firm tannins and plenty of oak say lay this down for another couple of years. Not a monster fruit ball, but ample.

Originally part of a joint venture with Robert Mondavi, Seña is now (as of 2004) completely in the hands of the Chadwick family, owners of Errazuriz. This cabernet-based blend from vineyards in Panquehue opens with coffee and mint aromas, along with sweet cherry and cinnamon notes. As the wine breathes, the texture becomes more voluptuous and the flavors develop an earthy, meaty character.

Sena Sena: An Inspiring Journey Winery Video

Seña is the culmination of a vision shared by two traditional wine families that tied together their dreams and efforts to give life to Chile’s first Icon wine.

In 1995, the leader of the Napa Valley wine industry, Robert Mondavi, and the President of Viña Errázuriz Eduardo Chadwick, embarked upon the Chilean wine industry’ first strategic alliance to create a unique wine that would capture the essence of the grape and the spirit of the land. They named it Seña, as a sign to the world that Chile was able to produce a truly great, world-class wine.

Pairing their innovative spirits and passion for excellence, they searched for four years to find the perfect terroir before finally discovering the hillsides in Ocoa in the Aconcagua Valley, only 40 km from the Pacific Ocean. In 1997 they launched Seña 1995, a unique Bordeaux-style red blend with a very Chilean soul given by its Carmenere variety, grown under biodynamic principles.

This first Icon wine was a milestone in Chile’s history and would forge the way for the emergence of other Ultra-Premium wines in the country helping Chile to be recognized among the world-class appellations
