Winemaker Notes

A wild yeast fermented 100% Moscofilero made solely from the Mavrofilero clone, one of the most aromatic Moscofilero clones, is one of Skouras's latest additions to the portfolio. Named ‘Salto', which means "leap" in Greek, this bottling represents their jump to the next level of Moscofilero production.

Elegant aromas of white roses, violet, jasmine and orange blossom. Full bodied on palate, despite its moderate alcohol percentage, with explosive acidity that leads to rich varietal expression.

The 2012 Moscofilero, coming in at 12.25% alcohol, was probably my favorite of the regular bottlings in this issue's vertical, if only by a small margin. Fresh and fine, it shows finesse and elegance, yet also concentration and waves of flavor. The exuberant fresh fruit seems completely youthful and it is quite delicious right now. This should hold pretty well. Whether you will gain much from holding it is another question. It is enchanting now.

True to the vintage, this is rich and full, yet it retains the delicacy common to the grape. It’s succulent, too, with crisp green-grape flavor and vibrant acidity.

Argolida Valley in Peloponnesos is a blessed land full of nature's gifts: world-famous for its citrus fruits (oranges, lemons, tangerines), its olive oil and olives, it is now fast becoming synonymous with our wines also. George Skouras, proprietor, oenologist and wine-maker at Domaine Skouras studied oenology at the University of Dijon. He went to work for a number of wineries in France, Italy and Greece before setting up his own in Pyrgela in Argolida Valley 1987.

A pink-skinned variety from the Peloponnese, Greek Moschofilero produces a delicatly perfumed, fresh white wine. There on the Mantineia plateau, the cool growing conditions allow ample time for the grapes to develop balanced sugars and aromatics. Moschofilero is actually the most popular of many mutations of the ancient Fileri grape. These range in color from white to red and produce an array of styles including fruity pink and sparkling versions. Somm Secret—If you already love Muscat, definitely try Moschofilero. Though the grapes are unrelated, they produce remarkably similar wines.

A large southern region of Greece, the Peloponnese contains the famous appellations of Nemea and Mantineia. While connected to the mainland by a tiny strip of land, essentially the region is a large Mediterranean island and excels in the production of red wine from Agiorghitiko, white from Moscofilero and sweet wine from the Mavrodaphne grape.
