Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

the 2013 Russian River Valley Pinot noir is a blend of three vineyards and offers a beautiful expression of the varietal and the cool climate and loamy soils it excels in. Wohler Vineyard forms the foundation of the wine, providing a strong base of structure, red fruit, and earthy notes. Riddle Vineyard adds balance to the blend with robust dark red fruit flavors and silky tannins. Located in Green Valley, Riddle is a young vineyard with exceptional Goldridge soils and sits high up on a ridge top overlooking many of the iconic Pinot noir vineyards in the region. We also added another layer to the blend by including a small amount of a special Vosne-Romanee clone from the renowned Reuling Vineyard. The resulting blend has a firm balanced structure and multiple layers of dark red fruit and earth. It exudes lush textures and earthy notes. It has a medium-ruby color with bright red cherry flavors, earth and a silky texture. This wine has a firm, balanced structure, with multiple layers of red fruit, earth and floral notes.

Professional Ratings

In this silky and seductive wine, integrated oak and tannin wrap around lilting waves of earth and rose petal, providing plenty of sensory intrigue. From several vineyards, including Wohler, it shines a light on the subtleties that can be coaxed from the appellation, along with a spectacular exuberance.Editors' Choice

While the Russian River Valley is a large appellation with multiple climate zones and soil types, it is best known for cool-climate varieties, with Pinot Noir as the most celebrated. The grapes benefit from a reliable late afternoon flow of Pacific Ocean fog through the Petaluma Gap and along the Russian River Valley that ensures slow and steady ripening and the preservation of grape acidity. Today many of California’s most highly regarded Pinot Noir vineyards are in the Russian River Valley, along with its sub-appellation, Green Valley.

Historically Russian River Valley Pinot Noirs had bright red fruit and delicate earthy, mineral notes. But changes in viticultural and winemaking practices have led to stylistic changes in some of the region’s wines. Adjustments to canopy management, among other techniques, have resulted in riper fruit and bolder wines as well. These show flavors of black cherry, blackberry, cola, spice and darker, loamy earth tones, accenting traditional Pinot Noir notes of strawberry, raspberry and light cherry.
