Winemaker Notes

Sourced from one of our highest elevation vineyards, the 2016 Rockfall Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon features an impenitent wildness that expresses the rugged growing site above the fog line. Concentrated aromas of blackberry, fresh tobacco leaf, graphite and dark chocolate with nuanced undercurrents of mulling spices. This wine’s powerful classic savory palate lies in perfect balance to its generous structure and dense plush tannin profile.

Another gem that’s going to flirt with perfection in a decade is the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Rockfall Vineyard. Based on 100% Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon aged 20 months in 65% new French oak, its deep purple color is followed by a mammoth-sized bouquet of crème de cassis, lead pencil shavings, scorched earth, and graphite. Showing more spice and tobacco with time in the glass, it has incredible purity of fruit, building tannins, and flawless balance, all making for a majestic Sonoma Cabernet Sauvignon that will keep for 30 years or more. Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Rockfall Vineyard offers up confident, bold scents of warm blackberries, ripe blackcurrants, licorice and charcoal with hints of crushed rocks, cigar box and violets plus a waft of licorice. Medium to full-bodied, the palates signs of energetic, crunchy black and blue fruits, with a solid backbone of ripe, grainy tannins and bright freshness, finishing long and earthy. Rating: 94+

Black olive, cedar, pencil shavings and sage define and accent this beautifully made wine, made from high-elevation vines. Stony mineral components make for a chalky, dusty texture of integrated tannin and mannered oak, the wine undeniably earthy and complex.

Stonestreet Proprietors Christopher and Ariel Jackson Winery Image

In the autumn of 1989, Jess Jackson acquired the Zellerbach winery and renamed it in honor of his late father, Jess Stonestreet Jackson. Stonestreet quickly garnered international acclaim for their powerful reds and luscious whites.

Today, Stonestreet wines are undergoing a transformation, using fruit from Alexander Mountain Estate and new winemaking techniques. Alexander Mountain Estate, with lean, well-draining soils and cooler temperature, produces fruit with smaller berries and more intense color and flavor. Stonestreet is dedicated to fulfilling the promise of Alexander Valley's exceptional and distinctive vineyards. Traditional, Old World methods of hand harvesting, small barrel lot production, native yeast fermentation and bottling each wine unfiltered brings out the best in specific grape varieties and provides the quality framework for each Stonestreet wine.

While Sonoma County is acclaimed—and rightfully so—for its Chardonnays, Pinot Noirs, and Zinfandels, it also produces exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon. Of the region’s 18 American Viticultural Areas, only a handful produce top-notch Cabernet Sauvignon. These appellations include Alexander Valley, Knights Valley, Sonoma Valley and Dry Creek Valley. Sonoma Cabernet Sauvignons made in these appellations can offer a complex array of aromas and flavors. Fruit notes such as blackberry, blackcurrant, cassis, black cherry and raspberry often are accompanied by hints of graphite, dusty earth, cigar box, toast and vanilla. The varietal has a rich history in Sonoma, and some of these Cabernet Sauvignons and Cabernet-based blends rival the best from Napa Valley.
