Winemaker Notes

The Upper Barn is our most transporting Chardonnay, and the 2016 vintage is no exception. Stargazer lily, ripe pear and lemon custard flood the nose, while the palate mirrors those qualities alongside a savory underpinning. The texture is both opulent and elegant, exhibiting the delicacy of fruit and a quartz-like transparency that only age, and a superb site situated at 1,800 feet can bring to a wine. This wine is extremely well-integrated with a lingering, mouthwatering and round finish that begs another sip.

Professional Ratings

Fermented and aged for 11 months in French oak (44% new), the 2016 Chardonnay Broken Road Vineyard delivers ripe apricots, pineapple paste, apple pie and allspice scents with hints of honeycomb and toasted almonds. Medium to full-bodied, the palate packs a wallop of intense flavors with layer upon layer of tropical fruit and spices, complemented by a creamy texture and finishing long and toasty.

Here is deep and well-stuffed Chardonnay that pulls out all the stops but has more than enough very precise focused, optimally ripened fruit to balance its liberal appointment of sweet oak and lees. It is a complete and decidedly complex rendition of great breadth and obvious ambition, but it is also very carefully structured and built to impress even more if allowed to rest in the cellar for another couple of years. There is most assuredly no need to hurry here.

Stonestreet, California
Stonestreet Proprietors Christopher and Ariel Jackson Winery Image

In the autumn of 1989, Jess Jackson acquired the Zellerbach winery and renamed it in honor of his late father, Jess Stonestreet Jackson. Stonestreet quickly garnered international acclaim for their powerful reds and luscious whites.

Today, Stonestreet wines are undergoing a transformation, using fruit from Alexander Mountain Estate and new winemaking techniques. Alexander Mountain Estate, with lean, well-draining soils and cooler temperature, produces fruit with smaller berries and more intense color and flavor. Stonestreet is dedicated to fulfilling the promise of Alexander Valley's exceptional and distinctive vineyards. Traditional, Old World methods of hand harvesting, small barrel lot production, native yeast fermentation and bottling each wine unfiltered brings out the best in specific grape varieties and provides the quality framework for each Stonestreet wine.

One of the most popular and versatile white wine grapes, Chardonnay offers a wide range of flavors and styles depending on where it is grown and how it is made. While it tends to flourish in most environments, Chardonnay from its Burgundian homeland produces some of the most remarkable and longest lived examples. California produces both oaky, buttery styles and leaner, European-inspired wines. Somm Secret—The Burgundian subregion of Chablis, while typically using older oak barrels, produces a bright style similar to the unoaked style. Anyone who doesn't like oaky Chardonnay would likely enjoy Chablis.

Home to a diverse array of smaller AVAs with varied microclimates and soil types, Sonoma County has something for every wine lover. Physically twice as large as Napa Valley, the region only produces about half the amount of wine but boasts both tremendous quality and variety. With its laid-back atmosphere and down-to-earth attitude, the wineries of Sonoma are appreciated by wine tourists for their friendliness and approachability. The entire county intends to become a 100% sustainable winegrowing region by 2019.

Sonoma County wines are produced with carefully selected grape varieties to reflect the best attributes of their sites—Dry Creek Valley’s consistent sunshine is ideal for Zinfandel, while the warm Alexander Valley is responsible for rich, voluptuous red wines like Cabernet Sauvignon. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are important throughout the county, most notably in the cooler AVAs of Russian River, Sonoma Coast and Carneros. Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot and Syrah have also found a firm footing here.
