Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

This wine is an attractive, deep plum color and displays great mulberry, licorice and chocolate notes on the nose. The palate is well structured with nice soft tannins and plumy fruit flavors. Great with barbecued meats and firm cheeses.

Blend: 93% Shiraz, 4% Mourvedre, 3% Viognier

Smooth and supple, this wine is polished on the surface so there are no apparent edges, its black fruit and tannins feeling as long and curved as a Modigliani sculpture. There's tension underneath, a spice that keeps driving forward through the sleek surface, ready to lift the flavors of a steak.

Taltarni, Australia
Taltarni Winery Image
Established in 1969, Taltarni was one of the founding wineries in the iron-rich Pyrenees wine region in Victoria. John Goelet, a direct descendant of the Guestier wine merchant family of Bordeaux, discovered the Taltarni Vineyard through a worldwide search for a site comparable to the great vineyards of Bordeaux. From the outset, Taltarni has a strong French influence with the initial plantings of Bordeaux varieties including Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Soon after, Taltarni extended its plantings with Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay. The Goelet family also sources Shiraz, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. Taltarni has built its reputation on elegant sparkling wines that are crafted using methode traditionale techniques, as wells as producing exceptional red and white wines. The distinctive labels, featuring a 17th century cartouche, represent the attention to detail and the French elegance and finesses that are hallmarks of all Taltarni wines.

Though Syrah originated in the Rhône Valley of France, Australia is home to the oldest Syrah (called Shiraz here) vines on the planet. Found in Australia’s Barossa Valley, where phylloxera has never threated viticulture, these ancient vines are between 140 to 175 years old!

Having brought fame and merit to the country’s wine scene since the early 1950s, namely via the debut of Penfolds Grange, today Syrah (Shiraz) claims rank as the most widely planted grape in Australia. In fact, the amount of land dedicated to Shiraz in Australia is now almost equivalent to what it is in France. Australian Shiraz has its own personality with flavors and aromas of intense blackberry, fruitcake, menthol, tobacco leaf and umami. Conveniently one can find great Australian Shiraz at a variety of price points but the very best will be dense, gloriously complex and capable of long aging.
