Winemaker Notes

This fresh and focused Sauvignon has bright aromas of citrus, apples and passionfruit with a distinct fresh cut grass herbaceous line running through it. On the palate the fresh fruit shines through with more green apples, lemongrass and passionfruit given focus by some fresh natural acidity, a touch of sweetness but finishing with a dry minerality.

This wine’s natural acidity and vibrant flavors make it a great accompaniment to all types of New Zealand seafood, specifically green lipped Mussels served with fresh summer salads and crusty bread.

The 2016 Awatere Single Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc reveals a nose of freshly squeezed lemons, yuzu zest, crushed stones and wild thyme. Crisp. clean and with great purity in the light to medium-bodied mouth, it delivers tons of citrus fruit flavors and a pleasant mineral edge with wonderful persistence.

Tohu, New Zealand
Tohu Winery Image
For centuries Maori, the indigenous people of New Zealand, worked on, lived around and loved the rugged yet fertile lands of their ancestors. There was awareness that the earth was the giver of all life. From the soil came food and that same food was cooked beneath the earth. It was accepted that the people who were born onto that land inherited the right to produce from it and to protect it for the benefit of all. Tohu Wines is the first indigenous branded wine to be produced for the export market. The superb quality blend, taken from the foremost wine growing regions in New Zealand, Marlborough and Gisborne, conveys the care and consideration, experience and understanding that is inherent in all the finest produce gifted from the land. Tohu Wines is one of New Zealand's finest achievements created from a mutual vision of harmony and respect of our people and our place.

Capable of a vast array of styles, Sauvignon Blanc is a crisp, refreshing variety that equally reflects both terroir and varietal character. Though it can vary depending on where it is grown, a couple of commonalities always exist—namely, zesty acidity and intense aromatics. This variety is of French provenance. Somm Secret—Along with Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon Blanc is a proud parent of Cabernet Sauvignon. That green bell pepper aroma that all three varieties share is no coincidence—it comes from a high concentration of pyrazines (herbaceous aromatic compounds) inherent to each member of the family.

An icon and leading region of New Zealand's distinctive style of Sauvignon blanc, Marlborough has a unique terroir, making it ideal for high quality grape production (of many varieties). Despite some common generalizations, which could be fairly justified given that Marlborough is responsible for 90% of New Zealand's Sauvignon blanc production, the wines from this region are actually anything but homogenous. At the northern tip of New Zealand’s South Island, the vineyards of Marlborough benefit from well-draining, stony soils, a dry, sunny climate and wide temperature fluctuations between day and night, a phenomenon that supports a perfect balance between berry ripeness and acidity.

The region’s king variety, Sauvignon blanc, is beloved for its pungent, aromatic character with notes of exotic tropical fruit, freshly cut grass and green bell pepper along with a refreshing streak of stony minerality. These wines are made in a wide range of styles, and winemakers take advantage of various clones, vineyard sites, fermentation styles, lees-stirring and aging regimens to differentiate their bottlings, one from one another.

Also produced successfully here are fruit-forward Pinot noirs (especially where soils are clay-rich), elegant Riesling, Pinot gris and Gewürztraminer.
