Winemaker Notes

The 2014 Tierra Roja continues a run of amazing Cabernets off of this singular site in the Eastern Oakville hillsides. Anyone who looks at this site, be they winemakers or newbies, understands just why these wines are so amazing. The slope, exposure and red rocky soils are just like heaven to Cabernet. This always shows a wonderful mix of red and black fruits and has such tremendous balance that there is no real beginning, middle or end. It is just an impression of seamless sweet Cabernet fruit with a bright lifted earth profile allied with blackberry, cassis and blueberry. This is easily one of the most amazing sites a Napa Cabernet can come from and the classic site where the goal is to just get out of the way and not screw it up.

The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Tierra Roja came in out-of-bottle at the top of its range, which is always a good sign. This is a 4-acre vineyard on the red soil hillsides, just below Dalla Valle in the Oakville corridor. This is a sexy, beautiful, fragrant wine with plenty of scorched earth, blackcurrants and licorice, but copious quantities of blackberry and blackcurrant fruit. This is a beautiful wine to drink now and, like so many 2014s, over the next 20-25 years.

Aromas of blackcurrants, red fruit, rust and tile. Medium to full body and firm and chewy tannins. A solid and powerful wine. Needs at least five years to soften.
  • 94
Firm and concentrated, with chewy, extracted dark berry, cedar, licorice and gravelly earth flavors. Engagingly complex, ending with a medley of red and black licorice notes. Best from 2021 through 2033.

We make great wines simply because we love making them. Wine is irresistible, it is fun, and it is about sharing passion, good fortune and community. TOR exists today because of the relationships we’ve cultivated over decades with mentors, grapegrowers and friends. This is indisputable: Tor knows a great vineyard. Less is always more when it comes to bottling some of the best grapes on the planet. In the tussle between the will of nature and the winemaker – our work is staying out of the way.

A noble variety bestowed with both power and concentration, Cabernet Sauvignon enjoys success all over the globe, its best examples showing potential to age beautifully for decades. Cabernet Sauvignon flourishes in Bordeaux's Medoc where it is often blended with Merlot and smaller amounts of some combination of Cabernet Franc, Malbecand Petit Verdot. In the Napa Valley, ‘Cab’ is responsible for some of the world’s most prestigious, age-worthy and sought-after “cult” wines. Somm Secret—DNA profiling in 1997 revealed that Cabernet Sauvignon was born from a spontaneous crossing of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc in 17th century southwest France.

Home to some of the most sought-after Cabernet Sauvignon in America, Napa Valley’s Oakville district stretches across the center of Napa's valley floor and foothills between the Vaca and Mayacamas Mountains. This AVA is home to the legendary To Kalon Vineyard and Martha's Vineyard, as well as many powerhouse wineries including Screaming Eagle, Silver Oak, Robert Mondavi, Opus One, Far Niente and Groth.

The climate is generally warm and agreeable, resulting in year after year of favorable vintages. Summer days see a gentle tug of war between warmer inland air and the cool air coming in from the San Pablo Bay, creating an ideal environment to grow red varieties. Oakville's diverse soils, namely ancient sea bedrock, clay and gravel, are well-drained, and perfect for high-caliber viticulture.

Cabernet here is often bottled varietally but is also popular in Bordeaux Blends. Oakville wines are known for their silky, sensual textures, structured tannins, dark and brooding fruit and lovely aromatics. These age-worthy and prestigious wines are favored by collectors throughout the world.
