Winemaker Notes

It is a very rare thing that the first wine that you make from a vineyard has everything that you could ever want in a wine. This is one of those rare wines. The 2013 Melanson Vineyard showsvery clearly why everyone in Napa scrambles to get fruit from Pritchard Hill. This beauty has power allied with depth, fruit allied with structure and grace allied with intensity. This is a mixof bright red fruits and intense black fruits, both playing off of each other perfectly. It is just one of those special wines you don't come across very often.

Explosive blackberry, currant, licorice and jazzy oak lead to a spirited, soulful mix of fruit and dusty, loamy earth, with caressing tannins. Drink now through 2030.

The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Melanson Vineyard comes from very rocky soils high on Pritchard Hill, directly above Colgin’s IX Estate. It is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from clone 7. Classic Cabernet notes of tobacco leaf, créme de cassis, blackberry, licorice, camphor and charcoal are all present in this opulent, full-bodied, multi-dimensional wine. This is another stunner from Tor Kenward, who seems to have the Midas touch and insider knowledge to access some incredible terroirs for his wines. This should drink well for at least 25+ years.

We make great wines simply because we love making them. Wine is irresistible, it is fun, and it is about sharing passion, good fortune and community. TOR exists today because of the relationships we’ve cultivated over decades with mentors, grapegrowers and friends. This is indisputable: Tor knows a great vineyard. Less is always more when it comes to bottling some of the best grapes on the planet. In the tussle between the will of nature and the winemaker – our work is staying out of the way.

One of the most prestigious wines of the world capable of great power and grace, Napa Valley Cabernet is a leading force in the world of fine, famous, collectible red wine. Today the Napa Valley and Cabernet Sauvignon are so intrinsically linked that it is difficult to discuss one without the other. But it wasn’t until the 1970s that this marriage came to light; sudden international recognition rained upon Napa with the victory of the Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon in the 1976 Judgement of Paris.

Cabernet Sauvignon undoubtedly dominates Napa Valley today, covering half of the land under vine, commanding the highest prices per ton and earning the most critical acclaim. Cabernet Sauvignon’s structure, acidity, capacity to thrive in multiple environs and ability to express nuances of vintage make it perfect for Napa Valley where incredible soil and geographical diversity are found and the climate is perfect for grape growing. Within the Napa Valley lie many smaller sub-AVAs that express specific characteristics based on situation, slope and soil—as a perfect example, Rutherford’s famous dust or Stags Leap District's tart cherry flavors.
