Saturated ruby. Musky aromas of cherry compote, plum and dark chocolate, with vanilla and tobacco topnotes. Sweet, pliant and deep, offering intense dark berry and floral flavors brightened and sharpened by cracked pepper and smoky minerals. Finishes long and sweet but focused, with a hint of licorice and slow-mounting, velvety tannins. This is the most successful bottling of this iconic Spanish wine I've had in many years.
Finely meshed and vibrant, boasting supple tannins to frame a smoky undercurrent and well-knit layered flavors of ripe plum, black currant, dried mint, mocha and pencil shavings. There's good density here, and the tannins are a bit firmer on the long, spiced finish. Drink now through 2023.
One of Spain's most character-packed wines, this vintage of Mas La Plana deals bacon, berry and earthy aromas in front of a weighty, fairly tannic palate. Becoming richer and riper as it unfolds, this is full of prune, plum and earthy stewed-berry flavors. It gets better and shows more complexity with air. Drink now–2018.
The 2008 Mas La Plana is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from vines planted in 1964, some of the oldest in Penedes, aged in new French oak for 18 months. It has a rounded, sensual bouquet with small dark cherries, Hoi Sin and violets with fine delineation. The medium-bodied palate has fine tensile tannins and a keen thread of acidity. It is harmonious and velvety smooth towards the pastille-like, grippy finish, which needs more finesse and personality. Drink 2014-2020.
