Winemaker Notes

Inspired by the result of our 2012 Family Reserve, we decided to increase the length of time in cellar from eleven months to eighteen months. This eleven-barrel blend is a selection of our favorite barrels from our three estates. With the extended aging, the aromatics jump from the glass with dark cherry, spiced dark chocolate, and raspberry; framed by the fine-grained tannins the palate expands like a peacock feather of cherries, black tea, and Tahitian vanilla. This wine’s finish builds with finesse and balance that gives this wine the ability to age. It’s perfect to enjoy now with friends and family or over the next 20 -30 years.

This is a barrel selection combining the best lots from all three estate vineyards. Refined, pungent, spicy and persistent, it opens with bright raspberry and cherry fruit, then lays on layers of anise, coconut, vanilla, caramel and a whiff of cannabis herb. It's long and concentrated, with good aging potential.

The 2013 Pinot Noir Estates Reserve spent 16 months in barrel, around 25 selected in this vintage. There is a pleasant chalkiness on the nose that pierces the red cherry and strawberry fruit, although I discerned a little more precision apropos the Ribbon Ridge 2013. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent ripe red cherry and strawberry fruit, candied orange peel and blood orange, leading to an almost sorbet-like finish that lingers nicely in the mouth. This will be a very seductive Pinot Noir that has the substance to last for 10-15 years.

Trisaetum Winery Image
Founded in 2003 by James and Andrea Frey, Trisaetum consists of two estate vineyards situated in two AVAs. Only Pinot Noir and Riesling are grown and produced, and only from the Frey’s estate grown fruit. The 22-acre Coast Range Estate in the Yamhill-Carlton AVA was planted in 2005 on a steep and rocky slope. The soils are Jory and Nekia (both volcanic) in the lower elevations and WillaKenzie (sedimentary) in the higher elevations. The 28-acre Ribbon Ridge Estate in the eponymous AVA counts Brick House and Chehalem’s Ridgecrest Vineyard as close neighbors, with Beaux Freres Vineyard just beyond. It’s soils are uniformly sedimentary. Both estate vineyards are farmed organic and biodynamic without irrigation. The Coast Range and Ribbon Ridge bottlings showcase each vineyard’s distinctive terroir with abundant depth, complexity, length and potential ageworthiness. The top wines, designated Estates Reserve, are best lots and barrels blended together from the two vineyards. They are exquisitely balanced and transcendently harmonious wines.

Home of some of the planet’s most amazingly elegant and expressive Pinot noir, the Willamette Valley is a pastoral, mixed landscape of green, bucolic rolling hills, dramatic forestlands and small, independent, friendly wine growers. As a leader in environmental stewardship, the valley has some of the nation’s most protective land use policies, with two-thirds of its vineyards farmed sustainably and over half, organically. While the valley claims a cool, continental climate, and is heavily influenced by the cold, moist winds of the Pacific Ocean, its warm and dry summers allow for the steady, even ripening of Pinot noir.

The potential of Willamette Valley Pinot noir continues to attract the investment of serious growers and winemakers both locally and from abroad, as naturally the finished wines bring accolades from professionals and enthusiasts. With a range of styles from delicate dried cherry, raspberry and hibiscus to stronger notes of truffle, mocha, plum and spice, a fine Willamette Valley Pinot noir is a perfect expression of both character and grace.
