Winemaker Notes

This wine is an homage to Joe Duarte, a prominent grape grower in Contra Costa who first introduced Turley to the incredible vineyards of the area. The wine is comprised of fruit from the Evanghelo, Mori, and Salvador vineyards, all in Contra Costa. The soil here is primarily sand, and as a result the wines have some of the softest, silkiest tannins Turley has ever seen in a Zinfandel.

Professional Ratings

An attractive, fruit-forward wine, Turley’s 2011 Zinfandel Duarte is soft, caressing and very nicely balanced. This juicy, vibrant Zinfandel has more than enough depth to drink nicely for a number of years. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2018. Range: 91-93

Ripe and briary, with raspberry and grilled herb aromas, delivering lively cherry, smoky sage and cracked pepper flavors. The tannins sneak in on the finish. Drink now through 2021.

Turley Wine Cellars Winery Image

Turley Wine Cellars was founded in 1993 by Larry Turley and makes forty-seven wines, the vast majority of which are single vineyard designate Zinfandels and Petite Syrahs. By focusing on old vine vineyards in particular, Turley aims to both create and preserve California’s unique winemaking culture.

All of Turley’s vineyards are either certified organic by California Certified Organic Farmers or somewhere in the process, and the winery uses all natural yeasts in the fermentations.

Turley aims to be stewards of some of California’s most distinctive vineyards, producing authentic wines that reflect their heritage.

Unapologetically bold, spice-driven and jammy, Zinfandel has secured its title as the darling of California vintners by adapting well to the state's diverse microclimates and landscapes. Born in Croatia, it later made its way to southern Italy where it was named Primitivo. Fortunately, the imperial nursery of Vienna catalogued specimens of the vine, and it later made its way to New England in 1829. Parading the true American spirit, Zinfandel found a new home in California during the Gold Rush of 1849. Somm Secret—California's ancient vines of Zinfandel are those that survived the neglect of Prohibition; today these vines produce the most concentrated, ethereal and complex examples.
