Winemaker Notes

The Hayne Petite Syrah was planted in 1953 by Otty Hayne while he was home from college, along with his father. All head-trained, dry-farmed and organic, this Petite Syrah is one of the most unique wines in California. Powerful and inky in its youth, the wine becomes more feminine and refined with age, and will outlive us all.

The 2014 Petite Syrah Hayne Vineyard was the most closed down and tightest of all of Turley’s Petite Syrahs. It has a dark ruby/purple color, but judging it on its current showing rather than its historic legacy and quality, this was the least impressive of all five Petite Sirahs. It is tannic and somewhat austere by the standards of this vineyard, but still dark, broodingly backward and ripe. Nevertheless, I didn’t get the texture, richness and finish that I found in the other Petite Sirahs. Let’s withhold judgment somewhat, but it certainly has outstanding potential. Rating: 90+?

Turley Wine Cellars was founded in 1993 by Larry Turley and makes forty-seven wines, the vast majority of which are single vineyard designate Zinfandels and Petite Syrahs. By focusing on old vine vineyards in particular, Turley aims to both create and preserve California’s unique winemaking culture.

All of Turley’s vineyards are either certified organic by California Certified Organic Farmers or somewhere in the process, and the winery uses all natural yeasts in the fermentations.

Turley aims to be stewards of some of California’s most distinctive vineyards, producing authentic wines that reflect their heritage.
