Winemaker Notes

The main source for the 2009 Sauvignon Blanc is the estate vineyard surrounding our winery on Dunaweal Lane just south of Calistoga. The Sauvignon Blanc here develops complex and interesting aromatics and flavors, and the cold nights retain crisp acidity which affords the wine great freshness and liveliness. In 2009, we brought in some old vine fruit from a nearby site that compliments the minerality and steeliness of the estate with underlying richness and juiciness.

Critical Acclaim

ST 90
International Wine Cellar

Pale, bright yellow. Pungent aromas of grapefruit pith, tarragon and white pepper, with a riper suggestion of orange blossom. Dense, tactile and juicy, with very good intensity to the tangy citrus peel and floral flavors. Still a bit youthfully disjointed but not at all hard. Finishes fresh and pure, with a piquant grapefruit flavor and very good thrust. I'd wait 6 to 12 months before pulling the cork-or, I should say, before unscrewing the cap.

Twomey Cellars by Silver Oak
Twomey Cellars originated with a remarkable vineyard, the Soda Canyon Ranch in southeastern Napa Valley, which the Duncan family – owners of Silver Oak Cellars – acquired in 1999. Planted with the finest French clones in well-drained volcanic soils, the Merlot that is grown there possesses such extraordinary complexity that it calls for a wine of its own. Silver Oak's winemaker, Daniel Baron, developed his passion for Merlot during the early 1980s while... View More

The Napa Valley and Cabernet Sauvignon are so intrinsically linked...

The [Napa Valley] and [Cabernet Sauvignon] are so intrinsically linked that it is difficult to discuss one without thinking of the other. Although Cabernet has many important outposts throughout the wine world, nowhere else has it achieved such success (and, at the highest end, commanded such lofty prices) than in Napa. Here, it is responsible for bold, opulent, and dark-fruited wines with grippy tannins and a healthy dose of alcohol. The best examples can age for decades. Each of Napa’s smaller sub-AVAs imparts a different character to Cabernet, such as [Rutherford’s] famous dust or [Stags Leap District's] tart cherry flavors.
