Vasse Felix Cabernet Sauvignon 2008
Essencey regional bouquet relying on fruit purity rather than oak to provide an alluring array of aromas; red fruit and cedar are gracefully supported by fine, almost silky tannins; elegant, long and harmonious to conclude.
Constricted at first, this is a powerful cabernet with energy to spare. The gragrand red plum and strawberry flavors develop out of a dense, compacted core, their sappy richness balanced by fresh acidity. As the wine evolves with air, it yields scents of the coastal forest - eucalyptus and cactus - that add to its disctinctive flavor. Decant a bottle for Cantonese spare ribs.
Of the same blend is the 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon, revealing a deep garnet-purple color and pretty perfume of cassis, violets, espresso, cassia and dried herbs. Crisp, structured and very fine, this rich, full bodied vintage gives layers of fruit and spice in the very long finish. Drink it 2012-2019+.
Glass-staining ruby. Spice-accented dark berries, cherry and violet on the aromatic nose. Deeply pitched blackcurrant and candied cherry flavors show a suave blend of sweetness and tension, picking up a licorice quality with aeration. Fine-grained tannins add grip and focus to the long, spicy finish. This is structured to age.
Vasse Felix is making boldly flavored yet balanced Margaret River wines epitomized by this Cabernet, which features cassis and mint aromas, bright fruit-driven flavors that manage to avoid jamminess and a firm, tannic finish. Drink 2013-2020.
