Winemaker Notes

Venus de Cartoixà is a very special wine for the winery because they pursue a very ambitious objective: to make a big white Mediterranean natural aging wine. It is a natural wine, which fermentates in a 600L barrel during 3 and 6 months. It ages 12/14 months in the same barrel and then it is aged into the bottle at least for 2 years more.

The 2018 Venus de Cartoixà was produced with Xarel.lo grapes, scarce in the zone, where the variety is known as Cartoixà. This is a white of strong personality, savage and characterful. This 2018 took me back to the 2016 that blew my mind. This wine needs some time in bottle, and sometimes they keep one vintage and release the following one before it, as it's sometimes a little reductive. This 2018 was released in May 2022 and is now very expressive, approachable and mineral, sharp and fresh, with pungent flavors and very good length. It has 13.5% alcohol, amazing balance and a salty finish. Sharp and straight.

Venus La Universal, Spain
Venus La Universal Winery Image
Venus La Universal is the creation of young and super talented enologist Sara Perez, the driving force behind Mas Martinet in Priorat, and Dominio de Bibei in Galicia. Sara’s father Luis was -along with Rene Barbier- the driving force behind the emergence of Priorato twenty years ago… Venus debut vintage was a stunning 1999, quickly assuring the new Denominacion de Origen “Montsant” in 2001 with a serious place in the Spanish wine scene. Tiny quantities of two different wines come from a number of schist & granite composed parcels around the village of Falset at altitudes between 300-700 meters above sea level, and many times in steep terraces, all enjoying a warm, Mediterranean climate with dramatic day/night temperature changes. Today Sara has joined forces with her husband Rene Barbier Jr. making this an impossible to beat combination of talent, experience, and bringing their parents work full circle.

Primarily associated with the Penedès region of Spain, Xarel-lo plays an important role in most Cava blends along with Parellada and Macabeo. Prized for its high levels of acidity and polyphenols, Xarel-lo adds strength, body and a distinct greengage or earthy character to these blends. Somm Secret—Just a few miles northeast of Barcelona, Xarel-lo vineyards around the town of Alella produce highly regarded still wines with fresh lemon and stone fruit flavors.

Surrounding the region of Priorat on all sides, Montsant shares much in common with its neighbor. Though its soils contain less schist than that of Priorat, its old Garnacha and Carinena vineyards produce wines of similar intensity and character.
