Winemaker Notes

With a beautiful translucent pink hue, VieVité exudes the colors of a true Côtes de Provence rose wine. On the nose, an expression of ripe tropical fruit is balanced with a pleasant bouquet of white flowers and a discreet touch of spice. On the palate, well-structured fruit and balanced acidity create a crisp and delicate finish.

COMMENTARY: The 2020 VieVite Rosé is pleasing and easy to drink. TASTING NOTES: This wine exhibits aromas and flavors of savory spices and dried cherries. Enjoy it with grilled chicken thighs topped with dried chilies. (Tasted: May 16, 2021, San Francisco, CA)

VieVite VieVite Estate Winery Image

Ideally located just 15km outside of Saint Tropez, Domaine Sainte Marie/VieVite was founded in 1884 and offers a long history of producing unique and exceptional expressions of rosé from Provence. The winery has implemented a complete restoration of the estate and vineyards, setting it apart a leading winery in Provence.

Domaine Sainte Marie is enrolled in the Haute Valeur Environnementale (HVE) program, a three-tiered system run by the French Ministry of Agriculture and has achieved the highest level of HVE certification - Level 3. HVE is a certification that addresses four elements: biodiversity conservation, plant protection, management of fertilizer use, and water management.

The winery is biodynamic with a sustainability mission that head winemaker, Christopher Duburcq, takes great pride in. Utilizing the historical and complex vines, an impeccable terroir and unique microclimate, Christopher and his team at Domaine Sainte Marie continually merge practical knowledge with fine winemaking techniques to produce the most exquisite rosé wines in the Côtes de Provence region.

Whether it’s playful and fun or savory and serious, most rosé today is not your grandmother’s White Zinfandel, though that category remains strong. Pink wine has recently become quite trendy, and this time around it’s commonly quite dry. Since the pigment in red wines comes from keeping fermenting juice in contact with the grape skins for an extended period, it follows that a pink wine can be made using just a brief period of skin contact—usually just a couple of days. The resulting color depends on grape variety and winemaking style, ranging from pale salmon to deep magenta.

Cotes de Provence is an extensive but valuable appellation that includes vineyards bordering the main Provencal appellations. Its sites vary from subalpine hills, which receive the cooling effects of the mountains to the north, to the coastal St-Tropez, a region mainly influenced by the warm Mediterranean sunshine.

Here the focus is on quality rosé, as it defines four fifths of the region’s wines. Following in the rosé footsteps, a lot of new effort is going into the region’s red production as well. A new generation has turned its focus on high quality Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault and Carignan. Cotes de Provence white wines, which represent a miniscule part of the region as far as volume, are nonetheless worthy of consideration and can include any combination of Clairette, Semillon, Ugni Blanc and Vermentino.
