    Winemaker Notes

Chenins like this, with their subtle balance of sweetness and acidity, are really the only wines in the world that give German Riesling a run for its money. A more surely useful and delicious French wine is hard to imagine.

    Vincent Raimbault, France
Two families, the Raimbault and Boucher families. are behind the Domaine de la Robinière. The paternal great grand father of Vincent Raimbault, acquired, en 1904, the house and the winery/cave situated at la Robinière. The great grand mother of Vincent Raimbault, owned the vines. Her son, Désiré Boucher, bought the house and the cave called "La Vallée du Vau" in December 1928. Vincent Raimbault took over in 1980. He developed sales at the Domaine, first from the "La Robinière" cave, then at the "La Vallée du Vau". He particpated in wine fairs in France and in Belgium. Since 1989, he has exported his wines, principally in Great Britain, the US, Canada, and Belgium. His son, Julien, began working with him in September, 2009.

Unquestionably one of the most diverse grape varieties, Chenin Blanc can do it all. It shines in every style from bone dry to unctuously sweet, oaked or unoaked, still or sparkling and even as the base for fortified wines and spirits. Perhaps Chenin Blanc’s greatest asset is its ever-present acidity, maintained even under warm growing conditions. Somm Secret—Landing in South Africa in the mid 1800s, today the country has double the acreage of Chenin Blanc planted compared to France. There is also a new wave of dedicated producers committed to restoring old Chenin vines.

Stretching east along the steep banks of the Loire River, Touraine is a major part of the Middle Loire. Soil variations of clay, sand, tuffeau and gravel throughout its subregions support both white and red varieties. Chinon and Bourgueil remain the source of Loire’s finest Cabernet Franc; various styles of the most outstanding Chenin blanc come from Vouvray and Montlouis.
