Winemaker Notes

Our Cru Cabernet Sauvignon is powerfully expressive on the nose with aromas of crisp red and black fruits, cassis and hints of lavender. The palate is built with layers of ripe blackberries, fresh pops of pomegranate, creamy milk chocolate and fresh tobacco leaf. This vintage is deeply concentrated with dense chewy tannins and a firm acid structure. Both will allow for supreme ageability while maintaining Cru’s signature ability to be plush and drinkable upon release.

The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Cru is a blend of 83% Cabernet Sauvignon and the balance other Bordeaux varieties, such as Petit Verdot, Merlot, Malbec and Cabernet Franc. Its sees about 50% new French oak and is a relatively large cuvée of just over 5,500 cases, meant to be drunk in its exuberant youth – the first 8-10 years. The 2014 Cru has turned out every bit as strong as their 2013, which says something. Dense, opaque purple color, wonderfully sweet red and back fruits, an enticing fragrance, silky tannins and a medium to full-bodied mouthfeel, with no heaviness or rusticity, are the kind of characteristics that consumers love and will certainly enjoy in this wine that should age effortlessly for at least a decade or more.

One of the most prestigious wines of the world capable of great power and grace, Napa Valley Cabernet is a leading force in the world of fine, famous, collectible red wine. Today the Napa Valley and Cabernet Sauvignon are so intrinsically linked that it is difficult to discuss one without the other. But it wasn’t until the 1970s that this marriage came to light; sudden international recognition rained upon Napa with the victory of the Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon in the 1976 Judgement of Paris.

Cabernet Sauvignon undoubtedly dominates Napa Valley today, covering half of the land under vine, commanding the highest prices per ton and earning the most critical acclaim. Cabernet Sauvignon’s structure, acidity, capacity to thrive in multiple environs and ability to express nuances of vintage make it perfect for Napa Valley where incredible soil and geographical diversity are found and the climate is perfect for grape growing. Within the Napa Valley lie many smaller sub-AVAs that express specific characteristics based on situation, slope and soil—as a perfect example, Rutherford’s famous dust or Stags Leap District's tart cherry flavors.
