Winemaker Notes

Another stunning value from Yecla, the 2011 Vinos Sin Ley Monastrell (100% Mourvedre from organic vineyards) possesses a dense purple color as well as a big, sweet bouquet of blueberries, blackberries, and chalky, earthy soil, and a heady, rich, full-bodied finish. It combines elegance with richness despite the fact that this area is known more for the rusticity of its wines than their finesse. Drink it over the next 4-5 years.

This wine has such a ripe, red berry, floral and spice character, with succulent and juicy flavors, it will pair with a wide range of cuisines and foods. VSL Monastrell's sweet fruit is well balanced and its acidity will help it pair well with Asian, Indian, Cajun and southwestern Tex-Mex spices.

Another amazing wine from Yecla, the 2014 VSL Monastrell is a dense, ruby/purple wine made from 100% Mourvèdre (Monastrell) planted in vineyards organically run since 1967. It spent three months in French oak, but the oak doesn't really show through. Elegant black cherry and blueberry fruit notes, along with earthy and chalky notes, impressive purity, medium body and light tannin all make for a delicious wine to drink over the next 3-4 years.

Vinos Sin-Ley, Spain
Vinos Sin-Ley Winery Image

In translation, Vinos Sin-Ley means "Wines Without Law". The objective of Vinos Sin-Ley is to create "new wines" that are value oriented. The concept, driven by creative innovation using nonconventional methods of harvesting, fermenting, blending, aging and labeling, results in wines exhibiting new fresh fruit driven flavors that are different from those achieved in the past.

Composed of a group of young winemakers from different regions in Spain, the wines crafted at Vinos Sin-Ley are value oriented, driven by experimentation, innovative insight and the shared philosophy of the winemakers. They meet twice a year to put into effect new projects of mutual interest and shared knowledge of the winemaking techniques implemented.

Spanish red wine is known for being bold, heady, rustic and age-worthy, Spain is truly a one-of-a-kind wine-producing nation. A great majority of the country is hot, arid and drought-ridden, and since irrigation has only been recently introduced and (controversially) accepted, viticulture has sustained—and flourished—only through a great understanding of Spain’s particular conditions. Large spacing between vines allows each enough resources to survive and as a result, the country has the most acreage under vine compared to any other country, but is usually third in production.

Of the Spanish red wines, the most planted and respected grape variety is Tempranillo, the star of Spain’s Rioja and Ribera del Duero regions. Priorat specializes in bold red blends, Jumilla has gained global recognition for its single varietal Monastrell and Utiel-Requena has garnered recent attention for its reds made of Bobal.
