Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

The lifted bouquet displays dark and red berry fruits with hints of dusty oak and cedar. The palate displays sweet dark and red berry fruit with earthy gravelly notes. Hints of graphite and bayleaf add a savory element to the wine. The wine is rich and complex with great length and balance supported by fine-grained tannins and seamlessly integrated French oak.

Pair with quality roasted, pan-seared or slow cooked meats. Beef is ideal, but duck, lamb or venison can be just as good. Crumbly aged cheddar and Manchego are great cheese pairings.

Blend: 91% Cabernet sauvignon, 6% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot

Professional Ratings

Here is a wine with balance and velvet texture. What a beautiful red. Full and harmonious.
  • 92
An elegant Margaret River red, this wine’s precise tannins frame black currant flavors and lend them lasting clarity. Its time in oak (50 percent new) boosts the wine’s sappy richness, an element that should integrate with the fruit as the wine ages.

This is labeled as Cabernet Sauvignon-Merlot, but be realistic about your expectations: This is 94% Cabernet, with only 5% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot. Cedar, cassis, sage and bay leaf notes are classic Margaret River expressions, as is the wine's medium body and streamlined feel. It's a harmonious if not particularly flamboyant wine that will be at home with a variety of dishes. Drink now–2025.

Voyager Estate is a small, second-generation, family-owned estate in Stevens Valley, Margaret River, Western Australia. Currently undergoing full organic conversion, their Estate is one of Australia’s most ambitious and innovative producers of world-class Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. All wines are 100% estate-grown, made and bottled, and reflect the unique qualities of Stevens Valley, with its undulating slopes, warm summers and cooling maritime breezes. Their aim is to shine a light on what makes their unique place in Margaret River so special. Both through how they grow and make their wine, and how they share and experience it. In doing so, they hope to help lead the way in establishing this very special place as one of the world’s great wine regions and experiences. Lead by Head of Winemaking and Viticulture Steve James, Steve is the custodian of a rich winemaking tradition, fostered by close collaboration between the winemaking and viticulture teams. Steve’s winemaking philosophy starts in the vineyards. From the outset, Steve has focused on sustainable farming, vine balance, clonal selection, and vineyard management in close collaboration with the winery team. This focus has allowed the vines to shine and become more adept at expressing the purity and character of the individual vineyard blocks.

One of the world’s most classic and popular styles of red wine, Bordeaux-inspired blends have spread from their homeland in France to nearly every corner of the New World. Typically based on either Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot and supported by Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot, the best of these are densely hued, fragrant, full of fruit and boast a structure that begs for cellar time. Somm Secret—Blends from Bordeaux are generally earthier compared to those from the New World, which tend to be fruit-dominant.

Home to some of Australia’s most elegant and long-lived red and white wines, Margaret River is situated in the farthest reaches of Western Australia. Relatively warm and dry, the region is cooled by breezes from the Indian Ocean. Margaret River takes some inspiration from Bordeaux, producing top-quality Cabernet Sauvignons and Bordeaux Blends with firm structure, mouthwatering acidity, balanced alcohol and notes of herbs and spice. For white wines, refreshing blends of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon as well as complex, age-worthy Chardonnays are regional specialties.
