Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

This rich and harmonious cuvee of 12 Pinot Noir clones beautifully showcases Wayfarer's vibrant spectrum of single-vineyard, estate-grown fruit. The wine is a dazzling deep ruby color that leads with heady aromas of wild blackcurrant and freshly picked strawberry. It evolves with notes of licorice and toasted oak, finishing with an intriguing lilt of forest floor, leather, rose petal and raspberry. The bright, juicy entry evokes flavors of cranberry and cherry, harmonized with a grip of fine tannins and earthy tones of cedar and tar. The long finish surprises with its fresh minerality and intense aromatics of violet and Tahitian vanilla. Showy now with two hours of decanting at cellar temperature, watch this wine evolve beautifully with cellaring up to 15 years.

This wine blends all 12 clones of Pinot Noir grown on the property, to tremendous effect. Sanguine, it traffics in pretty pomegranate and cranberry, with a quenching taste of kirsch-like cherry. Lightly spiced, it delivers an end note of milk chocolate on the lengthy finish, a stellar, drinkable wine from start to finish.

Showing the freshness and purity of the vintage, the 2013 Pinot Noir Wayfarer Vineyard is a young, juicy Pinot Noir that offers lots of black cherry, black raspberry, violets, charcoal, and flowers. Fresh, edgy and lightly textured on the palate, it doesn’t have the sheer concentration of some of the single parcel releases, yet has plenty of depth, nicely integrated acidity, and polished tannin. It will be even better in another year or three.

Medium ruby colored, the 2013 Pinot Noir Wayfarer Vineyard has nose of raspberry preserves, red plum compote and underbrush with touches of crushed stones, iron ore, dusty earth and smoked meat. The medium-bodied palate is tautly structured with firm, chewy tannins and oodles of freshness supporting the delicate red fruit and earthy layers, finishing long.

Wayfarer, California
Wayfarer was founded as a secluded farmstead more than 40 years ago, before its locale was defined as the now coveted Fort Ross Seaview AVA. In 1989, Jayson Pahlmeyer's winemaker, Helen Turley, discovered the site for sale down the road from her Marcassin vineyard. She introduced Pahlmeyer, declaring it destined to become "the La Tache of California."

In tandem with his daughter Cleo and renowned winemaker Bibiana Gonzales Rave, Pahlmeyer drives to make intricate wines of transcendence, answering to powerful, ever-unpredictable climate that rewards only the most observant and meticulous. It is an endeavor of true passion, an experiment that pushes the exactitude of winegrowing and winemaking to the farthest limits.
