In terms of taste 2019 is a very classical vintage with a marvellous juiciness, a ripe acidity and a grand maturing potential.

This comes very close to realizing my dream of gruner veltliner! An entire microcosm of herbal, peppery and sweet vegetal (think snow peas) aromas, then a stunning mouth feel on the concentrated palate that’s at once creamy yet invigorating with a ton of mineral freshness pushing the finish out in the direction of infinity. And only 13% alcohol. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

Despite vigorous swirling, the wine wants to give little away on the nose. The palate, however, reveals secrets of fine, smooth yeastiness that has salty folds of crushed herb savoriness. A fine citrus freshness not only adds zing but also a welcome, textured pithiness. This is a lovely, elegant wine that needs to evolve a little more. Drink 2022–2032.

This is grüner veltliner in all its compelling weirdness: It tastes of bay leaves and sage, peas and lentils, with a flinty, smoky mineral sense. The fruit element emerges with air—cider apple and green pear, with a hint of tart red berries—but the overall impression is earthy, musky and wild, with a lemon-pithy acidity that keeps it tightly wound. Hold this in the cellar for a few years; there’s lots more to come.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2019 Ried Gaisberg Kammern 1ÖTW Kamptal Grüner Veltliner is intense and aromatic on the concentrated and aromatic yet also fresh and herbal nose, which reveals perfectly ripe white and yellow fruit aromas that seem to be kissed by fully ripe Riesling berries. Rich and juicy on the palate, with crystalline acidity and precise and elegant fruit, the Kammerner Gaisberg is Hannes Hirsch's most complex and terroir-driven Veltliner and most of all a really excellent wine. The finish is intense and finely tannic, with right amount of juiciness. 13% alcohol. Tasted at Schloss Gobelsburg in June 2021.

Hirsch takes full advantage of the distinct terroirs found in the Lamm, Gaisberg and Heiligenstein vineyards. Johannes farms his vineyards sustainably and biodynamically and is certified by RESPEKT! Natural efforts have been made to ensure physiologically ripe grapes including high density planting, low trellising, canopy management and handpicking.
Fun to say and delightfully easy to drink, Grüner Veltliner calls Austria its homeland. While some easily quaffable Grüners come in a one-liter—a convenient size—many high caliber single vineyard bottlings can benefit from cellar aging. Somm Secret—About 75% of the world’s Grüner Veltliner comes from Austria but the variety is gaining ground in other countries, namely Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and the United States.
Climbing north and slightly east of the Kremstal region, Kamptal has very little vineyard area bordering the Danube River (unlike Wachau and Kremstal, whose vineyards run along it). The region takes its name from the river called Kamp, which traverses it north and south. Kamptal’s densely planted vineyards represent eight percent of Austria’s total.
The area experiences wide diurnal temperature variations like the Wachau but with less rain and more frost. Its vast geologic diversity makes it suitable for various experimentations with other varieties besides Grüner Veltliner and Riesling, such as Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc (Weissburgunder), Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, St. Laurent and Zweigelt.
But the region is probably most noted for the beautiful and expansive terraced Heiligenstein, arguably one of the world’s top Riesling sites, as well as some of Austria’s most extraordinary Grüner Veltliner vineyards. Kamptal’s soils, which are mostly loess and sand with some gravel and rocks, make it suitable for Grüner Veltliner, so much so that actually half of the zone is planted to that grape.
